Is there anyway to increase your 'ranks' in skills besides leveling? Such as feats or anything that can increase your max ranks, or anything of the like..

There seems to be some sort of guild benefit in cityscape which raises your max skill ranks to 4+HD?

Well, I hope that is not true. Max Ranks are a balance point for the game system that shouldn't be changed. Otherwise, it would allow you to qualify for things earlier than intended.

Chief among them is Prestige Classes and other feats.

if you raise your max ranks, then suddenly you can gain entrance to many prestige classes FAR quicker than normal.

Raising max ranks is not a reasonable thing to do for any Strict or Loose Games.

Even most Power Gamers frown on it.

There has been a few ways here and there.
But the ones I remeber has all been for d20 modern and had very limited application.

You're not getting into prestige class far quicker, you're getting into them one level quicker at most. It's hardly something to start doomsaying about.

In the legal world, when one court makes a ruling, even a simple ruling, it sets a precedent that other courts will follow and expand upon. It starts as one skill with a one higher rank. Then two skills or two ranks.

That may sound silly, but I've met several GM's that decided to alter things (like one GM giving a certain race a +1 higher BAB) without realizing the ramifications of the change. The GM I noted above didn't realize his effects. When I informed him, he changed it to a +1 Racial bonus to attack rather than altering the BAB.

The BAB, Base Saves, and Max Ranks are the three things that developers count on when they design prestige classes, feats, etc. Those are the corner stones of this system and to alter them, especially without considering its effects, it asking for trouble. Offer a broken feat to the guys in the Optimization forums and watch what they can do.

I would rather put the word out now and make sure everyone is informed. Call it a service to the gaming community so that the next group I join isn't playing with broken rules. =)
