I know Rapid Shot would allow you to throw three axes (assuming, of course, that you had quickdraw, and three axes), or throw an axe then quickdraw another one and TWF, but... Assuming that you only had the two axes that you're currently holding, would you be able to use it to get your two melee attacks against an adjacent opponent from TWF, and then take a 5ft. step back and throw one of your axes? The text of Rapid Shot just says you get one extra attack per round with a ranged weapon, so could you use that to get a ranged attack with a weapon that you've already made a melee attack with that round, or is that cheesy? |

The text of Rapid Shot just says you get one extra attack per round with a ranged weapon, so could you use that to get a ranged attack with a weapon that you've already made a melee attack with that round, or is that cheesy? Do you want the intuitive "this is how you should do it" answer? Or do you want the RAW answer? The "you should do it this way" answer is that Rapid shot is used to make an extra ranged attack, and so the implication is you should already be making a ranged attack. Its not so much a question of "the weapon made a melee attack this round" as "you didn't make a ranged attack this round." I think the best way to handle it is this: You could make a single melee attack, then back up 5' and throw both axes. However, by RAW, the definition of a "ranged weapon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/weapons.htm)" is: "Ranged weapons are thrown weapons or projectile weapons that are not effective in melee." Thus, throwing axes would not actually count for Rapid Shot at all, as they are quite effective in melee. Javelins, perhaps you may have a case for, but then you have to parse whether "effective" means "can be used to make a melee attack" or "can be used to make a melee attack without penalties." Obviously, RAW is stupid here, as in a lot of places, but thats how it goes. |
