for my new campaign and the world it is in im making the profession skills actually useful for adventurers.

i started with Profession (Cook) because i am a cook IRL. Please offer feedback and feel free to make suggestions for the remaining professions.

Profession Cook (edited)
Your proficiency in the kitchen allows you to cook remarkably well.

Unless otherwise stated Profession(Cook) checks take one hour and a single person can only gain the benefits of one meal per day. Consuming a meal takes half an hour and the effects aren't gained until the end of that time.

DC 10: Prepare a meal for four people out of the food it normally takes to feed three.
DC 15: Prepare a meal for four people out of the food it normally takes to feed two.
DC 20: Remove a poisonous or diseased part of food. You automatically know if you fail this check is made while making the meal and if you should fail when it is applicable all of the food you make during this check is poisoned or diseased. Using this ability can effect any amount of food so long as it is all prepared at the same time. It does not prevent food from spoiling.
DC 20: Detect poison of the ingested type. This check does not require time.
DC 20: Detect a disease on food
DC 25: Prepare a meal for one person that heals 1d8+1 points of damage.
DC 25: Prepare a meal for one person that removes fatigue DC+5/ additional person
DC 25: Prepare a meal for one person that grants a +2 moral bonus to the next skill check he makes withing the hour DC+5/ additional person.
DC 30: Prepare a meal for one person that heals 1d8+1 points of damage and removes fatigue.
DC 30: Prepare a meal for two people that heals 1d4+2 points of damage DC+5/ additional person
DC 30: Prepare a meal for two people that removes fatigue DC+5/ additional person
DC 30: Prepare a meal for one person that gives a +2 moral bonus to any specific skill check for the next 8 hours DC+5/ additional person.

Looks interesting! You might consider writing it up a little differently, simply noting that you can extend an effect to additional diners by increasing the DC by 5 per extra person.

I would also state that the cure or fatigue removal require an hour to work and that the morale bonus to the next skill check must happen within an hour of eating. And I'm not sure I like the "+2 to all uses of one skill for the next day" part... that seems a little over the top.

An alternative would be to allow certain alchemical item-like effects to be added to cooking, making cooking a way to access those effects without actually taking Craft Alchemy -- but the effects only work if you eat it within an hour of cooking. Antitoxin, healing salve, sensory benefits, and even temporary strength bonuses would all be appropriate (assuming that, like items, they'd have certain penalties after use).

On the other hand, alchemical items are pretty expensive compared to food, so I dunno how that'd work.

In power of faerun there is the merchant prince PrC where Profession merchant is the skill used to determine your profit ratings each month. In the DMG2 there is a whole slew of 'businesses' and associated skills, many of which can be professions. Also, to make the profession skill more useful itself, you could allow it to give synergy bonuses to other skills. for instance, 5 rnks in profession:smith could give you a bonus on craft:weaponsmith.

that statement about synergies reminded me that i am adding a synergy that with 5+ ranks in pro(cook) you get a +2 to survival for the purposes of finding food.
