| MaverickWolf09-02-07, 04:20 PM | Is there anything (maybe in Dragon or something) that makes TWFing while mounted a viable option? I'd like to play a dual-scimitar wielding druid who specializes in mounted combat on his animal companion, but I can't seem to find anything that really makes it worthwhile to use both (and search doesn't work worth a darn when you want to search multiple terms). |
| Kouk09-02-07, 04:44 PM | I don't think there is really anything that dissuades one from using both hands. Simply having 5 ranks in Ride skill would let you guide the mount with your knees, and even that can probably be waived if it is your Companion. |
| StruckingFuggle09-02-07, 04:48 PM | Halfling Outrider and ... I think there's another PrC, but it escapes me - eventually allow you to make full attacks on a mount. But the system is really set up to encourage focusing on a single devastating mounted blow instead of multiple attacks from the back of a mount. The problem with dual scimitars is you're going to be spending a lot of feats - maybe even more feats than you have to spend. |
| MaverickWolf09-02-07, 05:11 PM | I know the feats are intensive, but I'm going to be a human and use both flaws, so it helps some. That and they're aren't too many Mounted Combat feats that I'm worried about. I could end up changing my mind and just THing the scimitar though.... |
| Dog_O_War09-02-07, 06:15 PM | There is a feat in the PHB II called two-weapon pounce; this lets you use two-weapon fighting as part of a charge action. So you would need two feats to accomplish what you desire; Two-Weapon fighting (so you can actually hit things), and Two-Weapon Pounce (to attack while on the move). The mounted combat feats really help to augment this; Mounted Combat allows your mount to remain light and moble by not wearing armour (as you can negate one hit per round with a ride check; and who attacks the mount right?), Ride-By Attack is like free spring attack for your mount, and Spirited Charge lets you do double damage on a charge, which is awesome since you now have two attacks! |
| InkBlot09-03-07, 12:50 PM | Ride-By Attack is like free spring attack Just sitting on your mount is free Spring Attack. But better. Because you can attack in the middle of a double move or even a full run! Without any special feats! Make sure you read over the Mounted Combat section of the PHB very well. Fighting from horseback is awesome, even without any feats. |
| Dog_O_War09-03-07, 01:10 PM | You miss-quoted me; the rest of that quote is, "...for your mount" as in (because this is the important fact) your animal companion does not need to take the dodge feat or the spring attack feat leaving it open for two feats like Power Attack and Leap Attack. |
| InkBlot09-03-07, 01:25 PM | Except that Ride-By Attack doesn't do anything for your mount if you're not riding it. Normally, if your mount makes a single move you can attack at any point along that movement, you and your mount provoke attacks of opportunity, and then after moving the mount still has a standard action with which to attack something. If your mount has Spring Attack, then you and your mount can both attack an enemy at any point in it's movement, and it doesn't provoke attacks of opportunity (although you still will). Anyway, I'm not trying to contradict you. I'm just clarifying things for other readers. |
| Dog_O_War09-03-07, 02:58 PM | ...clarify? Your mount isn't exactly a mount if no one is riding it, now is it? He wanted options while mounted, not animal companion options (I don't mean to sound condesending and appoligise Inkblot if you feel nit-picked). Perhaps I should have stated, "Ride-By attack is like Spring Attack for you and your mount while mounted." |
| StruckingFuggle09-03-07, 09:26 PM | However, one of the big things that Spring Attack does, that Ride-By-Attack doesn't, is let you avoid AoO. |
| Jay_Ibero_91109-04-07, 01:17 PM | However, one of the big things that Spring Attack does, that Ride-By-Attack doesn't, is let you avoid AoO. RIDE-BY ATTACK [GENERAL] Prerequisites: Ride 1 rank, Mounted Combat. Benefit: When you are mounted and use the charge action, you may move and attack as if with a standard charge and then move again (continuing the straight line of the charge). Your total movement for the round can’t exceed double your mounted speed. You and your mount do not provoke an attack of opportunity from the opponent that you attack. Special: A fighter may select Ride-By Attack as one of his fighter bonus feats. Look again. |
| StruckingFuggle09-04-07, 05:32 PM | ...huh. Okay. :) Hey, I'm happy to be wrong! (but now I wonder why I was so sure that wasn't the case...) |
| 1 ton ghost09-04-07, 09:25 PM | Flyby Attack doesn't (the AoO that is), i guess it's counting on it's reach (10ft neck or tail, etc.) to keep you from threatened/threatening target by space for AoO's sake. the dual wielding mounted type sounds like a "Mameluke", Saracen mounted units, really good at killing knights and other mounted Western Crusader types back in the day. pity Druid isn't proficient in lance and so forth... still, this doesn't mean you couldn't shape change and charge as a rhino or fly in, etc. |
