From Rules of the Game: All About Mounts (part 1) (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20050125a) You and your mount act on the same initiative count. When you're riding a mount, roll initiative normally. When your turn comes in the initiative order, you and your mount act together. Riding an untrained mount in a battle can keep you from acting. If your mount is smart enough to act on its own, it might function as an NPC and keep its own initiative number, which could prove inconvenient for you (see Intelligent Mounts in Part Five for details). Does my horse get both a move action and a standard action? The horse gets actions just like any other character/monster. Is my horse also capable of performing attacks of opportunity while I ride it? Assuming it is trained for war, yes. Remember that it is unlikely to have combat reflexes and uses the rules for natural attacks. If it is not trained for war, failure to successfully control it in battle may prevent it from making AoOs If I am a Druid and the horse is my Animal Companion, when does the horse gain Feat? I don't know what effect being a druid's animal companion has, but horses/creatures gain feats at the rate of one feat per three hit dice gained. How many abilities does a horse get as it levels? You mean ability score increases ? If it's a druid's companion, the Online SRD section on Druids Animal Companion (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/druid.htm#theDruidsAnimalCompanion) says An animal companion gains additional skill points and feats for bonus HD as normal for advancing a monster’s Hit Dice. Note that it does NOT include ability score increases. A druid's companion already gets strength/dex improvements. Under "Improving Monsters" the online SRD says Treat monster Hit Dice the same as character level for determining ability score increases. This only applies to Hit Dice increases, monsters do not gain ability score increases for levels they "already reached" with their racial Hit Dice, since these adjustments are included in their basic ability scores. Can it take a class? Probably not. There are exceptions, but generally only humanoid or near humaniod creatures can take class levels. |
