| Silvermoon05-31-07, 08:57 AM | I'll do a pixie/Rogue in a 4th level campaign and would like to know what could be good feat for it. Just for your information, my dm reduced the level adjustment to +3 as he remove or reduce some power. So I'm a pixie(+3)/Rogue level 1. I've thought about these, but as I don't have a lot of books I wondered what feat I could have miss. What could be cool., - Song and Silence Trustworthy (+2 diplomacy / +2 gather information) - Complete Adventurer Jack of all trades (1/2 in every skills that can't be used without training) Point shot blank ALSO : what could be a good prestige class to chose in the future? Thanks Silvermoon |
| Shawno05-31-07, 09:20 AM | It's an interesting character concept -- I'm curious to know which abilities got axed or reduced to go with the reduced level adjustment and what that means on a larger scale. For example, has your DM changed pixieness in general or is your pixie one that... comes up short compared to friends and family? If the second, there're some interesting roleplaying seeds there, perhaps. As for your question about feats, I'll dig through and see if I can come up with anything that seems a particularly grand fit, though what you've listed certainly sounds good presuming your character concept includes really leading with those feats. Speaking of, exactly how many is your character starting with? One other thing I feel compelled to mention, I tend not to use feats to increase a pair of skills, though Jack of all Trades is one I'd be likely to use. Even with as much importance as I tend to give Spot and Listen, I've yet to make use of Alertness save via a familiar or psicrystal. Instead I just lean on roleplaying, skill points, and the odd additional bonuses (such as the occasional racial bonuses) or, failing that, spells and/or powers. Feats are hard enough to come by and more unique in what they can do. That said, if you're going to be the "face" of the party, Trustworthy wouldn't be a bad feat at all. |
| Silvermoon05-31-07, 01:41 PM | He remove the possibility to create arrows of sleep and memory. He also diminish the statistics. The spell polymorph (self) was also removed (as the errata and srd suggest). The invisibility was changed from at will to a number of time per day. Anyone has any other thought? |
| tui05-31-07, 03:49 PM | It depends on your campaign/DM. If diplomacy and the like can be used routinely to avoid combat, then go that way. If you're pretty much guaranteed to have frequent combat, then I'd go with PBS and other ranged attack feats... you want to do whatever you can to avoid combat, especially melee combat, as your character will be VERY frail in the hit point department. Your DR will help, assuming that hasn't also been nerfed, but one good melee hit will still take you down. You'll still do decent damage with your ranged attacks (especially crossbows), since you can usually sneak attack from improved invisibility... and your enemies' ranged attacks will be less likely to get through your DR and SR; so stay above the fray and pelt them with bolts. Jack of All Trades can be a very good feat for a skill monkey, but with this character I don't think you have the luxury of focusing on your skills just yet. |
| Ogg05-31-07, 04:11 PM | It's going to depend on your role in the group. If your primarily there for trapfinding Complete Scoundrel has some Luck feats that stack & let you re-roll things like a failed Disable Device roll (handy). If you're going to be in melee combat at all you might want to pick up Weapon Finesse & a level or 2 in Sword Sage from the Book of 9 Swords, and the Feat Shadowblade so you can add dex to damage instead of strength. |
| Silvermoon05-31-07, 04:31 PM | Here is my thought of my characters. First, I would like to be the "head" of the group. second, as I will have only 7 hit point, I'll try to do both melee and range. For melee, I'll use a sap on humanoid creatures and a kukri on other. I will also use a short bow. I'm considered a 1st level thief in a 4th level campaign. I keep in mind that I have DR 10/cold iron and SR of 16. I'm going to use bluff as role-play in combat and diplomacy/read mind to convince people or gather information/intimidate to find answer. The skills will be very useful for my character and I'll have a lot of fun playing it. third, I don't have the book of nine swords, unfortunately. This feat sound cool, but I have to take 2 level in another class, it could be a pain for my thief class. I don't want to be a trapfinder in first instance. But I'll surely have to do some. I already have weapon finesse and dodge from my race |

I already have weapon finesse and dodge from my race Wow -- you're going to be in a 4th level campaign and have 7 hit points? I wouldn't worry about melee -- or rather, I would. That is, I'd do everything in my power to keep this character out of melee. That's what your minions, I mean, fellow party members are for. :D Rather, I'd lean into the social realm. Tui may be right that you aren't yet a "skill monkey," but you certainly could be eventually and that's a pretty good start. With that, if you intend to use diplomacy to talk your way through or around problems, you might try to sell your DM on the Smooth Talk feat. It lets you use the Diplomacy skill at only a -5 penalty rather than the usual -10 if you're going to try to use it in the space of one round. Getting back to combat, presuming your character's intelligence is 13+, I'd seriously consider getting Combat Expertise (PHB). This character of yours will be at risk to drop with nearly any hit for at least the next few levels, and anything to improve AC or otherwise keep him/her out of harms way may be really useful. Edit: I just reread your last post, and caught the DR 10 and the spell resistance. That inspired me to look over the package more carefully. I may have to think about making a pixie myself one of these days, wow! Combining the above with the fact that you can be airborne more or less indefinitely and I'm less concerned about any single hit dropping your character below 0. Still, unless you're really drawn to the idea of being a light tank, and it sounds like you aren't, I wouldn't bother much initially with feats designed to make you better in combat. Another question I have -- are you planning on staying with rogue fairly exclusively? I ask because it might be worth considering going multiclassed early on and getting some kind of spell casting or psionics going. It might help round out the party and having magic or psionics on top of your ability to both fly and be sneaking has great potential it seems to me. As for your question about prestige classes, there are probably at least 30 that'd work well given what you've shared with us already. If you decide to multiclass, that'll make some difference. For example, Arcane Trickster works well if you add wizard, sorcerer, or bard -- not so well if you go with divine magic or psionics. On the other hand, psionics opens up a path to the Elocater -- among other things, by 6th level you can move the whole party around via both teleport and plane shift relatively cheaply. Psionics aren't usually thought of as being particularly "fey", though, so you could either be a bit of an odd duck or stick with more traditional magics (or maybe the world you'll be in won't have those stereotypes). And if you go divine, well, extra healing is almost always nice and things druidic certainly fit the with traditional feyness. |
| Silvermoon06-04-07, 09:58 AM | For you concern I have an initial 19 (10 + dex(+7) + natural armor(+1) + small(+1)). I don't planing to have an armor of any type. Having an armor that accept +7 maximum bonus is rare and I don't want to bother with weight problem (10 str * .75). For my intelligence is not a problem, with the beginning +6, it's very easy to have 13+. I also don't plan to mix with mage, cleric, psionic class. As I already have a penalty of 3 level for my race, having a mage will be my doom... less hit point. I'm planning to use some potion of mage armor to increase my AC to 23 when I will need it or use my invisibility in dangerous scenario. Thief is the class I want to have. But I don't exclude another class (1 or max 2 level) if I need to chose a good prestige class. |
| tui06-04-07, 10:23 AM | The problem with DR 10/cold iron is that cold iron isn't particularly expensive... granted it isn't normally particularly common either, but your DM can throw it in any time he wants to. So if your DM is prone to metagaming, I'd be very reluctant to rely much on your DR. The spell resistance on the other hand is (and always will be) fabulous. Oh, and I love the idea of fey using Intimidate. For some reason I just have a hard time disassociating Intimidate from Strength/size in my mind... but with your high Cha, you'll be great at it! |
| Silvermoon06-04-07, 10:48 AM | The problem with intimidate is that small creature get a -4 on intimidate. I don't think my DM is prone to metagaming and during my 20 years of role-playing, I nevered bought or use a cold-iron weapon and at it is low expensive, it's not very common that you encounter fairy. I have 19 in charisma and I didn't chose intimidate as my skill and prefer Diplomatie (8) and bluff (8) to make people believe in me. Also, I bought a hat of disguise that will help me to bluff everyone I encounter. Being a fey of 2'10'' is easy to tell that I'm a child and child tend to be easier to convince people of anything. I have a lot of possibilities with this item. Add to the powers (1 per day) that I have, I think I'll have a lot of fun. |
| tui06-04-07, 11:29 AM | The problem with intimidate is that small creature get a -4 on intimidate. Ahh, I missed that; I don't play small characters very often. Sounds like a fun character; enjoy! |
| Silvermoon06-04-07, 11:31 AM | It's my first time that I play a small character too. I'll feel a little bit short compare to other. I'm always willing to try different thing thought. New challenge. |

Hello again. :D At least in the games I'm used to , your AC is pretty good for that level range -- I agree you're probably okay there. Unless it really doesn't fit the character concept, I'd strongly encourage you to take a few levels of druid at some point. You actually get more HPs as a druid than you do as a rogue and it'd make the character a lot more versatile and flexible. Or, another interesting option would be bard. That'd overlap well with the levels of rogue. Regardless, your prestige class options will be a lot wider if you're carrying more than one class. Also, I'm curious, Silvermoon, why you're so set set on "going rogue." If you're after skill points, bard, and even druid, do pretty well in that regard. If it's a roleplaying thing, personally I really like forming a character concept and wrapping potentially unexpected classes into it. For example, even a level or two of sorcerer can be great for a fighter type -- true strike, shield, and even the odd utility spell like alarm, animate rope, comprehend languages, or identify can be really handy. On the other hand, if you're desperate to get to something like Improved Uncanny Dodge, well... multiclassing isn't a great idea. Still, one of the main features of the class is the sneak attack and for a character who's intent on trying to negotiate through as many conflicts as possible, it seems to me that having access to spells like comprehend languages, tongues, and calm emotions (all bard spells) or entangle, heat metal (to encourage combatants to drop their weapons and/or stop to take off their armor) or obscuring mist (all druid spells) would be handy. Actually, the more I think about what I understand to be the intent for your character, I'd be tempted to postpone or even skip altogether the levels of rogue and go primarily with bard. More than any other class the bard is a mixture of them all and is an absolute natural for being the face of a party. |
| Deathmond06-09-07, 10:18 AM | Might I suggest a level or 4 of Warlock? You'd get a couple good buffs (+6 bonus to the social skills iirc), and you'd have a ranged touch attack to use at-will for sneak attacks(provided of course you get them flat-footed) |
| NobodyRemembersThis06-09-07, 03:50 PM | I'd have to agree with Shawno - from a pure perspective, Bard would be your best choice overal for class. Have your perform skill be Perform (Comedy) and keep up a steady diatribe of insults and commentary while ye are insvisible to power yer bardica abilities. Fun Fun Fun! As a rogue, I'd say go with Skill Focus (Diplomacy) at level 1. It gives you a net +7 to diplomacy before adding in your hefty charisma modifier. That's a +11 - You'd have a great chance of winning people over whenever you want. As for combat feats, go with Combat Expertise, Improved Feint, and Weapon Finesse. Take that bluff skill and turn it into sneak attack central. :ayyyy!: |
| Silvermoon06-11-07, 03:40 PM | We will run a campaign and I didn't want to have a "spell/prayer" users because of the +3 level adjustment. We already have in the group a aasimar(1)cleric(3) and a Mage(3)/fighter(1). I chose thief as for the innate magical abilities of the pixie. I like to trick and dominate people's emotion in doing role-play. I'll look at your proposition and decide what to do next. Pretty sure I'll stick with the thief another 2 levels. Also, If I chose something else than sorcerer and thief, I'll get xp negatives. So maybe turn 1 level in sorcerer. I don't know... |

If you're already underway as a rogue, I can see where it might make the bard less compelling. Otoh, there's a feat in Unearthed Arcana that gets you basically an extra favorited class of your choosing, so if you like some of the other options (like bard) that'd be a way to do it without the x.p. penalty. Another option might be to see if the DM would let you switch that first level of rogue over to bard -- in my games we don't often do that but occasionally if someone realizes they missed something important and the shift wouldn't involve too much rewriting we'll just solve it that way. I really do think that bard is the best class for the character concept you've got going, though not by so much that you couldn't make it work with rogue. And regardless, the point is to be having fun and we all have fun different ways. |
| Kevin Andrew Murphy06-12-07, 01:01 AM | I'd go with one of the "handful of cantrip" feats from Complete Arcane that give you a few small cantrips and 1st level spells you can use per day like a sorcerer. It would be an easy way to give yourself a bit more fey magic without taking levels as a spellcaster. You could also look at some of the gnome only feats from Races of Stone. Yes, they're gnome only, but as a pixie is even more of a fey short person, they'd likely fit. |
