a while ago on the races board there was a template simply called "blind creature". it was a bit powerful, but I liked the idea, and soemone sujested that it might make a better heritage feat than tempate, and that gave me this idea... I dunno how balanced or not it is (that's where you good folk come in :D ) but I think it has an interesting flavor to it (I hope so, anyway) Let me know what you think, and/or how I can improve it.

Sacred Blindness [Exalted]
Having lost your sight in the service of a holy cause, grater good, or other noble path, your celestial parton(s) have granted you an ability to preceive the world around you despite this, and to be aware of those who would do you harm
Requierments: Servant of the Heavens, Favored of the Compaions, or Knight of the Starts, and must have been permenantly blinded in the service good.
Benefit: You gain Blindsight to a range of 5ft+5ft/2 HD. You further gain blindsence out to twice that range. You cannot be caught flatfooted and Add 1/2 your Cha bonus as an insight bonus to AC, to a maximum of 1 point per 2 HD

Hmm. I'm playing a half drow/half moon elf ranger6/scout3/horizon walker2 who was permanently blinded during our campaign. I hadn't considered an option such as this, but I would highly recommend taking Blindfight and Hear the Unseen as prerequisites as well. Being a ranger with the archery combat style, I put seeking on my bow.:)
That's about the only advice I can give you.

1: ... There is no such thing in d&d as permanent blindness.

2: Eww, it's exalted. Is anyone going to take it, ever? And why is it exalted, anyway?

I have nothing constructive to offer on the actual subject of the balance of it, though.

There's permanent blindness if you convince your DM to make it permanent. I enjoy playing challenging characters, and when my character was blinded, I decided to see what would be necessary to overcome the handicap. It's become one of the best characters I've played:)

Okay. Fine. "Under the established rules of DnD, there's no such thing as permanent blindness, only blindness that you don't have the resources at the moment to cure, though, as with everything, DMs may houserule differently". Better?

I understand the rules regarding blindness (deafness, or any number of handicaps). No reason to get snippy.
