Is there a rule anywhere that says you can save a feat slot for a level or two so that you can meet the minimum requirements for it??

no. there is no such rule. In fact, there are rules stating exactly the opposite.

Excellent. Where?

in your PHB, page 22 under feats.

That plus the FAQs.

Allowing you to save feats means you can take certain prestige classes earlier.

-------

I have proposed a new feat:

Saved feat

PreRequisite: Wisdom 13+

Benefits:
This feat does nothing. When you go up a level, you may trade it (give this feat up and take another one instead of it) for any other feat that has no pre-reqs.

Not seeing any rules there about getting a feat means that you can get it at later date.

Found this in the 3rd edition FAQ
When you gain skill points or a feat, do you have to spend
the points or choose the feat right away? Is there any way
to save skill points or feats?
You have to spend skill points or choose feats as soon as you
get them.
There’s no reason for DMs to be absolute about this. If
you’re running a campaign and one of your players just can’t
decide right away, it’s okay to let the player wait awhile, but
the character must spend the points or choose the feat before
the character in question gains another level. Just delay all the
benefits for the new level until the player spends the points or
chooses the feat.

It specifically states that you gain the feat at that level. Not that you gain the option to select a feat whenever you want to. The trick to understanding this kind of rule issue is to be an absolute literalist. The rules do exactly what they say and nothing else. This works great for all rules, unless there is a conflict between different rules or different versions of a rule.

Ask your DM and allow him to house rule the way he feels is best.

D'oh, we're arguing the same thing! (Sorry, I misunderstood your original post).

Why does this get asked every month or so?

As already stated no. Read the PHB. Someone mentioned page 22, try also pages 58 and 59. The part talking about feats is in the page 59.

Because there are always new players joining the DnD world (and these boards) and new players will always have the same questions. So be helpful to them and welcome them to the game.

Can't you take a feat that you don't meet the prereqs for and as soon as you meet them you can then use that feat?

Like taking str dmg and losing the ability to power attack, the opposite of getting a str boost to be able to use power attack?

I believe one of the rules in picking feats is you have to meet the pre-requisites for it. How you meet the pre-reqs can be done via magical items (such as a strength or dex boosting item used to meet the pre-reqs for say Power Attack or TWF) but you still need to meet the pre-reqs to take the feat.

No, you have to have the pre-reqs for a feat to take it, even if you only have them temporarily.

For example, a PC with Str 10 could have bull's strength cast on him as he levels up in order to take Power Attack. Of course, he would only be able to use PA while buffed.

You can take a feat and lose the prereqs later, but not the other way around.

Schnikies! So the world DOESN'T relvolve around those of us that have been on the boards for a while.

But seriously, Saldar is right on. Can somebody sticky his post for the next time someone complains about one of the dual shield user questions?

While I had figured he was new to the boards, I think new people should at least read the PHB before asking this type of question. It is not like the answer is not there in print, or unclear in wording.

But in his defence, he did ask is there a rule anywhere. Anywhere is not limited to just the PHB. There are numerous D&D books in which some rules conflict or overrule the core rules.

And you knew every rule and where it was in the PHB after reading it?

Even those of us with years of game experience do not know every rule off the top of our heads nor can we always find them easily within the books. That is one of the main purposes of this board, players helping players. It does not matter how trivial a question may seem to more experienced posters, it is important to the poster asking the question and should be treated as such. When I started playing the internet didn't even exist. If I had a rules question back then there was literally noone I could ask for help. No boards, no sage, no nothing, just the books.

The way we do it now in our campaign is we have to find a trainer for some such as combat specific ones (specializations and whatnot), so saving the feat is just part of the process. When we began our characters, and made it a few levels in to somewhere around 5th, we just chose feats we wanted and had the prerequisites for without finding a trainer. This actually works well to help flesh out the campaign and feel like we're a part of it rather than just some entity that's slowly growing in power.
