All magic items take day(s)to make depending on their value (Divide by 1000 and round up), but what about scrolls?

Assuming all the following spells are cast at 1st level single scoll of CLW will take a day to scribe but what about one that has (say) 1 x CLW, 3 x Shield of Faith and a Bless. The total value of the composite scroll is well below the 1,000 gp limit but does it count as a single magic item or as 5 (one for each spell) and therfore take five days?

Thanks

If the total value of the scroll is 1000gp or less it will take only 1 day to scribe. The "number" of spells on the scroll has no bearing other than to determine the value.

The downside :thinks: is that it is a single magic item and not 5 separate ones.

I don't know, does it?

In other words, if you make one scroll that you can not rip up and hand to 5 different people, then it can be made as one scroll, you need to have the 5 spells memorized for that day, and if the cost is less than 1,000 gp you can make it in one day.

If you want to be able to hand the different scrolls to different people, they need to be a different day of crafting for each scroll.

Thanks for the responses!

A scoll is a single item even with multiple seems to be the concensus!

The way I've always understood Scrolls, they were basicly a magical item with 1 "charge." However, there are rules for placing more then one spell per scroll. Each spell is it's own "charge on the item, though the scroll is 1 item for purposes of creating no matter how many spells you were to place on it. All other creation rules, for costs and time, are as per those detailed in the DMG.

:shifty:

Thus is actually more efficient when producing Scrolls of Cure Light wounds and the like to place mutliples of the spell on the scroll when making it; thus allowing a 4 or 5 spell CLW Scroll to be produced just as fast as a 1 copy scroll.

Of course, Wands of CLW are still a more efficient means of item creation.

Also, I believe somewhere it is stated (FAQ? Errata? Sage Advice?) that 6 is the maximum number of spells one scroll can hold. So if you can do 6 spells for less than 1000 gp, you can do the scroll in one day.

Staffs have multiple spells in them and they are one magic item. A scroll with more than one spell on it is still one item. If its base price is 1000 or less, then one day it is.

The DMG (p237/238) only mentions a limit on the number of spells on a scroll as part of the random scroll generation. It does not address the limit of created scrolls. DMG p287 places no limits on the number on the scroll.

FAQ p56 likewise does not address the limit on the number of spells on a scroll, it only addressed if it was one item or multiple (it is one.)

Skip Williams did write a Rules of the Game article suggesting that 6 spells was the limit that you could have on a single scroll without needing to spend an action to find the right spell.

Bear in mind that you still need to be able to cast that many spells to scribe that many scrolls in a day. For example, a cap of 6 spells on a scroll is moot to a 1st lv wizard anyways, who only has 2-3 spells, and can thus scribe 2-3 spells on a scroll at any one time (though he can ask the party cleric to contribute some spells as well, so that their downtime is not wasted).:)

I like that, that makes sense. Thanks for the tip.

Is this allowed in LG? I thought MIC happened between mods, where you wouldn't have access to the party cleric (or even know that you were going to be partying with a cleric during the next mod).

Also the 6-spell per scroll limit is arbitrarily dumb and doesn't have any place in the game IMHO. It's not like you see people abusing scribe scroll like say...CWI!

I am not familiar with LG. I was working under the assumption that the party would more or less spend their downtime together. Thus, a wizard could provide the usage of the scribe scroll feat, and the cleric provide the spellcasting, to say, create a few scrolls of CLW and bless. But it is really more to make more efficient use of your downtime. Why scribe just 2-3 scrolls each day when you can do up to 6?:)

Of course, the drawback is that they are all on the same piece of paper, so passing the same scroll around during combat might be a hassle...:P

Can my wizard craft more than one item in a day if the
total cost to create the items is no more than 1,000 gp?
No. All items take at least one day to craft, so you can’t
combine multiple cheap items into a single day’s work. A small
loophole to this rule is the scroll with multiple spells, which
counts as a single item.
According to the rules, creating a magic item takes one
day per 1,000 gp in its base cost, with a minimum of one
day. The random scroll generation charts in the Dungeon
Master’s Guide state that a scroll could have up to six spells
on it. Does this mean that when I create a scroll I can place
six spells on it? Does it count as one scroll or six for
purposes of item creation (in other words, should it take
one day or six)?
A scroll with multiple spells counts as a single item for the
purpose of determining the time to create it. A divine scroll
with six castings of cure light wounds (market price 150 gp)
would take 1 day to scribe; a divine scroll with six castings of
heal (market price 9,900 gp) would take 10 days to scribe.
You’d need to expend (and prepare, if that’s required by
your class) the spell once for each time it appears on the scroll.
The act of scribing cure light wounds the first time onto a scroll
expends cure light wounds, which means you’d need to have
another one prepared to scribe it again.

These are from the Main FAQ. I read once that the limit was 6, but in the Rules of the Game 2 on Magic Item Creation, Skip Williams suggests that there can be an almost limitless amount when he suggests limiting how fast you can find a specific spell on a scroll that contains many many spells. He suggest it takes a move action to find a specific spell on a scroll with 7 or more spells on it.
