can someone give me a couple of examples of how to scribe a scroll. The way i am reading it is that the higher the level the character is the higher the price to make the scroll even if it is a 1st level scroll. That doesn't make much sense.
thanks in advance.

ok, think about it this way. 2 wizards. 1 is 3rd level and 1 is 5th level. the 3rd level wizard can cast a magic missile with 2 missiles and the 5th level gets 3 missiles for the same first level spell. shouldn't a piece of parchment that allows you to cast a spell that grants you 3 missiles cost more than a piece of parchment that allows you to cast 2 magic missiles? I mean you get more damage with the 3 missiles one. now, if the spell does NOT have a level progression like disrupt undead, caster level is the lowest caster level can be to cast the spell. level 1 in the case of disrupt undead. permanency on the other hand is a 4th level spell. the caster level for a permanency scroll is level 7 for a wizard and level 8 for a sorcerer. now is this starting to make sense? you are paying for the increased ability of the scroll's creator.

You can scribe a scroll at a lower level than your character. For example, if your wizard is 7th level, you can still scribe a Sleep scroll as 1st level wizard, and the cost would only be 1*1*25=25gp. You can get by with the lowest level that still allows you to cast the spell.

You are free to set the CL of the scroll to any value from the lowest required to cast the spell to your CL.

So a 2nd level spell made by a level 20 character could be CL 3 to CL 20.

thank you for the help, i didn't know that you could make spells at lower levels. I understand the two different levels with magic missle that the higher one would cost more i just didn't know that the other spells that didn't advance would cost what they originally cost. I was just reading it wrong.

My next question is from the dungeon masters guide. Under creating scrolls it uses 12.5 x the level of the spell x the level of the caster. Is this cost put on top of the other equation of spell level x its caster level x 25?

thanks again in advance

the first price you listed is the cost if you were to scribe the scroll yourself (plus a few XP, of course). The second price is the cost if you were to buy a scroll (at the standard sale price) from another caster.

To scribe yourself you need Feat: Scribe Scroll and you need 25*CL*SL/25 XP to pay.

If you have all these questions you might not realize this:

The formula for Scrolls, wands, weapons, potions, armor and just about everything else is the same. The modifier is what is different.

For instance you always need to figure out the market price first

Scroll: Caster Level x Spell Level x 25
Wand: Caster Level x Spell Level x 750
Potion: Caster Level x Spell Level x 300
Armor: Bonus x Bonus x 1000
Weapon: Bonus x Bonus x 2000

Now, for the cost to create, just divide by 2

Scroll: Caster Level x Spell Level x 25 / 2
Wand: Caster Level x Spell Level x 750 / 2
Potion: Caster Level x Spell Level x 300 / 2
Armor: Bonus x Bonus x 1000 / 2
Weapon: Bonus x Bonus x 2000 / 2

For XP, just divide by 25

Scroll: Caster Level x Spell Level x 25 / 25*
Wand: Caster Level x Spell Level x 750 / 25
Potion: Caster Level x Spell Level x 300 / 25
Armor: Bonus x Bonus x 1000 / 25
Weapon: Bonus x Bonus x 2000 / 25

*This makes scrolls seem confusing, x25 then /25, but once you understand the formula is the same for all, just the modifer changes it makes more sense.

Happy Gaming!
