| ElIsRa07-29-07, 01:02 AM | I was reading my copy of the DMG2 and crossed over the part about apprentices and mentors. I noticed that the mentor once done with his mentorship, gains the apprentice as a cohort. The book was very vague on this, and I guess I'm just wondering, can you have a cohort from the Leadership feat AND a cohort form the mentorship? Also, could you have multiple cohorts from your mentorship? |
| Mojo_Rat07-29-07, 01:08 AM | Generally speaking you can have only one Cohort. Every case I have read about that references gaining a new Cohort explains that it replaces any existing cohorts. However i do not personally own DMG II to know what is written there. |
| ElIsRa07-31-07, 07:56 PM | Although I don't actually have my DMG2 with me so I can't quote from it, I can tell you that it does not say anything about replacing an existing cohort, only that you gain the apprentice as a cohort after 5 levels of mentorship. If it had such a mention, I doubt that I would have been silly enough to comment about it here. **gives Mojo Rat a half-hearted scowl** |
| tarkin07-31-07, 07:58 PM | I really dislike multiple cohorts. It slows down the game a LOT, makes people jealous ("He gets to go twice/is monoplizing the DM's time"), and is suspect when it comes to balance issues. |
| ElIsRa08-02-07, 08:07 PM | Well actually, although I tend to agree about balance, I don't agree about it slowing down the game, ect. A cohort should act as an NPC. An NPC with one of the PCs interests very close in mind, but an NPC none the less. Either way, this doesn't really answer the original question (see above for details). |
| Mojo_Rat08-02-07, 08:20 PM | I offered my opinion because while I dont have the DMG II every other case that i am aware of (undead leadership feat) The Thaumaturge Prc (as two examples) When you get a new cohort the status of wether you alreadh have a cohort is an issue. The General Idea that i have gotten is that you are only intended to have 1. Although I agree with the slowing the game statement also :) |
| Dog_O_War08-03-07, 03:17 AM | This is a loophole for two cohorts that only the most...liberal...DM's would allow; they had better be prepared though for it, but if it is allowed it (leadership and mentor feats) can be great for the guy who always wanted to use things like the swarm-fighting feats, phalanx-fighting feats, of be that Faerun dwarf race (or was it gnome?) that got morale bonuses for fighting along side clan members but could never get the other players to go along with it (holy run-on sentances batman!). I love this feat (mentor), but it is most assuredly not for every campaign. Three gnomes with large shields and short swords, AWESOME! |
