Erego, I have a Shade as a companion. Currently, I haven't gotten the level to upgrade him by +2 HD (lv 6 shadowdancer is when I get this, so in 2 more levels). Can I make my shadow companion into my cohort? Supporting: As I understand it, anything with an intelligence over 3 can take class levels, yes*? So with it's intel of 6, can it take (a) class level(s)? If so, do I subtract it's HD from the cohort level, and fill the rest with class levels? If so, awesomesauce. No, I cannot remember exactly where this came from; it's something that seems to be floating around the back of my head. If it's incorrect, please, do tell me! |

That doesn't mean you couldn't make the shadow a cohort, but it wouldn't gain XP like a cohort so I don't think you'd get any benefit from it. However, allowing monsters to take class levels is a pretty common houserule... even WotC does it all the time. So you can always see what your DM thinks about it. |
