03-18-08, 03:53 PM It's an archmage special ability. Archmage is a prestige class in the DMG. You can also find it at www.d20srd.org.

03-18-08, 03:54 PM You're looking for Selective Spell:

Selective Spell ShS 21 You can screen allies from the effects of your area spells.

That says it's in shining south, but it's been reprinted elsewhere.

Scult spell allows you to change the area of an area effect spell (from normal to line, cone, ball, radiation, or 4 10ft blocks). Could be used in the same manner, I suppose, but if you're looking to cast Burning Hands with your buddy standing right in front of you and leaving him unscathed, it's selective.

03-18-08, 08:43 PM ShS? What book is that?

Also, there is a feat in Complete Adventurer that allows you to have one person in the spell's affect remain unaffected by your spell, although you can't get it until level 12 at least. It's called Extraordinary Spell Aim.
