Hey all-

Is there a feat that allows someone to shoot a light weapon in melee combat without provoking an attack of op? I was under the impression Point Blank Shot already allowed that, but the guys in my group disagree.

If there's none available, does anyone think it would be wonky to create a feat that allows this (obviously, the prereq would be PBS)?

No only class abilities do that I believe. And spells/powers.

PBS just add hit/damage.

It's an Epic Feat
COMBAT ARCHERY [EPIC]
Prerequisites: Dodge, Mobility, Point Blank Shot.

Benefit: The character does not incur any attacks of opportunity for firing a bow when threatened.

Normal: Without this feat, a character incurs an attack of opportunity from all opponents who threaten him or her whenever he or she uses a bow.

Defensive Archery (Races of the Wild) gives you a +4 dodge bonus against AoO when making a ranged attack while threatened.
The prerequisite is Point Blank.

Thanks for the quick responses, guys.

Epic Feat!??! Is there a game-balance reason why that's epic? It doesn't seem like it's particularly powerful.

The book Races of the Wild has a general feat: Defensive Archery. You get a +4 to AC when you provoke an AoO with a ranged attack, similar to Mobility's AoO bonus. This would seem to apply whether you were using a ranged weapon or a thrown weapon. It has as a pre-req of Point Blank Shot.

One home-rule way to add it to a campaign is to alow a player to substitute Defensive Archery for Mobility in the feat tree to qualify for Shot-on-the-Run.

Edit: I see NyMpHo beat me to it.

Reason: Mostly to establish a difference between melee and ranged combat. If you could wield a ranged weapon in melee without penalty, there's not much point of having a melee weapon. You would be just as effective from 5ft as your are from hundreds of feet away.

But of course, your foes would pick up on this idea was well. Why should they even attempt to close into melee with your ranged combatants when it won't help at all? Swords are all but absolete.

Then the sword market crashes, Walmart goes out of business, and total anarchy errupts across this green earth. And we don't want that, now do we :P

Nephlite is right that there is a class benefit. So you're not entirely out of options. I think it is in Order of the Bow Initiate and it is called Close Combat er sumpthing like that. Check the archer classes in Complete Warrior and Races of the Wild, or maybe Races of Stone (is that were Cragtop Archer is)?

I know you were looking for a feat, but if you are really looking for a good archer type, you really have to pick up one of the prestige classes...well almost, because Rangers are pretty good too.
