| Quick0103-28-08, 05:47 PM | One of my players has selected the feat Energy Substitution with a focus on electricity. My question is simple. Does the feat allow the character to replace the energy descriptor of any spell he casts with electricity, or only the energy types listed in the feat (fire, acid, sonic, cold, elec)? Specifically, can he make his Magic Missiles (Force energy) into Electric Magic Missiles, forgoing the Force ability to strike incorporeal creatures for the +1 caster level he gets for casting an Electricity spell? |
| Malek299103-28-08, 06:23 PM | Nope. He can only replace the energy types listed in the feat. You can't replace force, so no electric magic missles. Also note you can't select force as the type of energy you can substitue. (Although I remember a prestige class that allows you to substitute force damage in place of the five energy types). |
| dman1123503-28-08, 11:39 PM | NOt sure on that PrC Malek, but the Archmage lets you substitute any energy for any other energy. Also, Force s not an energy, there are nly five energies. |
| Nezkrul03-29-08, 12:15 AM | also, Energy Substitution (sonic) doesn't exist and requires a houserule, fyi |

He can only replace energies, force isn't an energy. Look up energy in the PHB glossary for the list. also, Energy Substitution (sonic) doesn't exist and requires a houserule, fyi More like it did exist and was errated out of the game, iirc. |
| Nezkrul04-02-08, 09:12 PM | what book? cuz it's not in Complete Arcane, and thats the first place I recall seeing Energy Sub metamagic feats. |
| Neutronium_Dragon04-03-08, 02:51 AM | It appeared in books well before that; it was even in 3.0E ones. The earlier versions allowed any five energy types. (Thereby prompting enough screaming and foot-stomping from the anti-sonic crowd to get it dropped from the list.) |
| narack04-03-08, 07:34 AM | (Although I remember a prestige class that allows you to substitute force damage in place of the five energy types). Force Weaver really powerfull and give at the end something like +5 force damage per Dice so 15d6 force fireball = 15d6 + 75 |
| risner04-03-08, 09:32 PM | what book? cuz it's not in Complete Arcane, and thats the first place I recall seeing Energy Sub metamagic feats. Energy Substitution CAr 79 You can modify an energy-based spell to use another type of energy instead. Energy Substitution DD 50 The deity can modify a spell that uses energy to use another type of energy. Energy Substitution Mag 21 You can modify a spell that uses one type of energy to use another type of energy. Energy Substitution TB 40 You can modify a spell that uses one type of energy to use another type of energy. Specifically Magic of Faerun, Deities and Demigods and Tome and Blood (all 3.0) had sonic. |
| dman1123504-04-08, 10:20 AM | Then the sister feat: Energy Affinity (Mini) which is exactly the same as energy substitution but a different feat. |
| HARLEYDUDE04-04-08, 11:32 AM | Force Weaver really powerfull and give at the end something like +5 force damage per Dice so 15d6 force fireball = 15d6 + 75 what book is this in? I have a cleric who is ready to go into another PrC, and would like to look at this. With my luck I wont qualify. HD |
| narack04-04-08, 12:19 PM | i think it's in path of magic but im not sure, he can also conjure a Ghost weapon :P. the force substitution come at like level 5. one of the prerequisite is a certain number of force spell in your spell list. Spell Compendium Many Jaws spell is a nice one. |
