Can someone without a trained skill use that skill. For example: My fighter wants to take (knowledge of the planes) but its a "trained only" skill. DOes that mean I have to takea level of bard, wizard or cleric to get that skill? Because the PHP says "trained only) in the skill section, yet I see tons of prestige class examples in the compleete book with it. And I already know how cross class works etc.

Trained means you can not use the skill unless you have a full rank in it.

Normally, you can make an untrained attempt.

That is ANYONE can jump, even if you have no ranks in Jump skill. You just won't go as far.

But Knowledge (The Planes) can only be done if SOMETIME in your life you did a little bit of training and took a rank in Knowledge (The Planes).

Some people believe it is worth it to purchase a single rank in all the trained only skills.

You are allowed to purchase a full rank in the trained only skill at a cost of 1 skill point if it is a class skill.

If it is not a class skill, then you are allowed to purchase a full rank in the trained only skill ata cost of 2 skill points.

So no, you don't have to take another class, you just have to pay double.

Right. "Trained Only" means you can't use the skill unless you have put some amount of skill ranks into it. Knowledge skills would be cross class for a fighter.

Long, unnecessary answer that might confuse everyone: In general, you can sort of use skills that are "Trained Only", but it is really an ability check that cannot overcome DC 10 no matter what you roll. This can let you know certain things that are generally classified as belonging to the realm of particular knowledge skills, but nothing of any real importance (common knowledge only, like DC 5 Knowledge(Arcana) "I know that wizards and sorcerers cast spells! Yay!"). For instance, without training it is impossible to identify a monster in the field, because the minimum DC is 10 + HD of the creature, and untrained can only reach 10 exactly.

That's not to say you don't know a cow when you see it, but you can't tell anybody what special cow attacks it possesses.

True. Well that lets the game expand alot more then we always new of. They really should make things clearer in the PHB, like for example the turnning damage lol!

Try the "Destroy Undead" variant from Complete Divine.

1st fighter: Gods! What is that beast!
2nd fighter: Methinks it is...a cow!
1st fighter: "Cow?" What manner of powers does it possess?
2nd fighter: I do not know! If only Wizzy the Wise were here to advise us!
Cow: Moooo!
Both Fighters: It's using a breath weapon! Run!
