Is there an existing skill for sailing?

My players want to get a ship for themselves and I was thinking either make a skill(sailing) or use profession(sailor) or perhaps even survival.

Is there an existing skill for sailing? what part of sailing? navigating? stearing? commanding a crew?

I'm pretty sure profession(sailor) does it. Knowledge(geography) for knowing where you are going and how to get there.

All parts of sailing, I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with profession(sailor) for the ship stuff.

and survival for navigation (charts by starts and such)

I just read stormwrack, and profession(sailor) is what you need to actually sail the boat. Knowledge(geography) keeps you from getting lost, & survival is needed to avoid things like coral reefs & sand bars.

Profession (sailor) should cover pretty much everything you need.

Ooooh, that gives me an idea! Why not create a Ranger Variant that's geared explicitly towards the sea? Or has one been created already?

Your regular sailor:

Balance
Climb
Knowledge: geography
Profession: Sailor
Spot
Survival
Swim

Plus if you're a pirate:

Appraise
Bluff
Decipher Script

I'd say Diplomacy or Intimidate over whatever Decipher Script is for.
jadehawk

intimidate may be a nice one for a pirate, but I think decipher script is still a good one at least for your stereotypical pirate...reading treasure maps and ancient scrolls from buried treasures...arrrr, etc.

Treasure maps arn't known for their complexity, they are written by pirates after all, crazy pirates. And why do they need to read scrolls? Better to just hawk it.

Able Bodied Seaman-Profession (sailor)
Bosun (or Bosuns Mate)-As above +Intimidate
Master-as above+Leadership (Represents Owner)
Captain- Profession (Merchant) (Commands Ship)
Pilot-K/S Geography (Navigates Ship)

Treasure maps are often coded so other people don't understand them...

I still don't see what Decipher Script has to do with it. Unless the pirate wrote it in Dwarven or something.

Or wrote it in a cypher or code he made up. Then the only way to read it would be with a decipher script check.

I suppose a pirate could if he wanted to pull off the write in code stuff. There really isn't anything dealing with treasure maps in Stormwrack so I don't know.

Also Use Rope is quite common skill with sailors (tying knots to secure sails, using grappling hooks to board ships, etc...)

It depends a lot on the rest of your setting, but the average crewman of a real-world sailing ship up until the 16th century or so was unlikely to be able to swim.

Profession (Sailor) will cover most of the regular crew activities (sail handling, knowing which rope to pull for what purpose). Most regular crew would be unlikely to have much Knowledge (geography). Only a small smattering of experts need actual navigational skills.

If your players are going to be roleplaying long-term on a ship setting, then take some time to flesh out some characters of the crew. Ships need a range of expertise - specialists such as a Carpenter, Medic, Cook etc. Obviously, you don't need to detail everyone, but doing so for some significant individuals makes sense.

I'm assuming your players are going to form the "officers" of their vessel, so it would be they who need the esoteric skills of navigation and command.

I can't imagine anyone navigating a ship without some knowledge of astronomy. Knowing where you want to go is one thing, figuring out how to get there is another, especially if the only permanent features are the stars. I'd say Geography in itself is useful only when you're not out in the open sea..
Qube

04-08-07, 04:37 AM
well, you could follow the coast. this way you don't need much knowledge about astronomy, and you need knowledga about geography (when do ou encounter dangerous coasts, ...). even if you sail at open sea, ou need knowledge geography when ou come acros a coast, to see on the map what coast it is.

Profession (sailor) for crew
Profession (Capitan) may or may not have Profession (sailor) at a high rank for Capitan
Profession (navigator) may or may not have Profession (sailor) and Profession (Capitan) for navigators
Capitan probably has Profession (navigator) too
Bosun (or Bosuns Mate) ,Pilot etc has commonly more then 4 ranks in Profession (sailor)
offerers etc has commonly more then 4 ranks in Profession (Capitan) probably has Profession (navigator) too but less than the Capitan of the ship ( most of the time)

Cartography for any pilot is a must. Without it their charts and logs would be useless. I'd add in that a pilot without his charts, rutters and instruments would be like a wizard without his spell books and components.

Same on the above mention of swimming. Most people avoided going into water above their waist unless they had to. Fishermen were more likely to learn to swim - once you got out of range of land, they figured "why bother?".
