I am confused by the wording of the cross class skill. page 62 of the phb. It says, "Regardless of whether a skill is purchased as a class skill or a cross class skill, if it is a class skill for any of your classes, your maximum ranks equals your level +3" does that mean it is a class skill for purchasing always or is it only for when you level a class that has it as a skill. Please Help as i am confused.

The max ranks is calculated based on if a skill is a class skill or not. If any of your levels have a skill as a class skill the max ranks are level+3.

When you buy ranks you determine if it is a class skill or cross class skill based on the class you gained your level in.

It is only to determine maximum skill rank, if said skill is at least a class skills for one of your classes (when multiclassing).

But if you just level up your fighter class and you want to improve your Hide skill, you'll need to pay 2 skill points per rank. You can max it to your character level + 3, but it's expensive if paying for anything other than a rogue's skill points (or any class that have Hide in its class skill list).
