| StevenO03-23-07, 11:30 PM | Realistically it could fall under any of them but the Profession (Tanner) may be the least likely. A tanner deals with hides not actually skinning them. I'd also say that Profession (Hunter) is possible (they run outfitters and organize guides and such) but the Survival skill is what really performs the work. My final answer is the Survival although I believe official sources also exsist. |

| UnknownMourner03-24-07, 04:20 AM | Allow Craft (armorer) or Craft (clothier) or Craft (leathergoods) to be used as a profession in the wilds, but instead of cash they get the same value in "parts" for items they make with the craft. If they have 5 ranks of Survival they get +2 to their craft rolls to gather "parts" in this way. Do the same with Craft (bowyer) or Craft (woodworker) for making bows and arrows in the wilds. We allow any craft to scavenge for it's parts in this way. If someone actually wanted to buy a "gathering" skill to speed things up, do it as a profession and let them stack their ranks. So if you were Craft (leathergoods) 8 ranks and Profession (skinner) 8 ranks, you could just use it as a profession to make the normal roll/2 gold per week or roll/2 silver per day; or you could scavenge for parts for yourself or another leatherworker at 16 ranks, plus the Wis bonus to skinner. Even with this houserule you'd still need 2 weeks to gather supplies to attempt to craft a 100 gp item. (Take 10 +16 ranks + about 3 wis + 2 synergy from Survival=31/2=15.5 gp in supplies for Craft (leatherworker), of 33 needed for a 100gp craft attempt). It's still slow but it's better than nothing. |
| draco111903-24-07, 08:23 AM | Craft: Taxidermy? In either Unearthed Arcana or PHB2, there IS a feat called Trophy Hunter which requires 5 ranks in Craft (Taxidermy) as a prereq. |
| DeathXI03-24-07, 01:03 PM | After browsing some more and talking to some friends, I'm leaning mostly now towards Survival, with the DC Being 10 + HD of creature. |
| wizarddog03-24-07, 07:33 PM | Yes, use survival. When your skinning your not really creating anything-your collecting a resource. Just like mining-which is a profession. If they want to make good money at it then they need the profession. Not that you can't collect money with the survival skill you just might not be as good at selling it. wizarddog |
| Shadowfax703-25-07, 09:05 AM | After browsing some more and talking to some friends, I'm leaning mostly now towards Survival, with the DC Being 10 + HD of creature. I would make it a fixed DC, like DC 15. HD should not have anything to do with the DC. Besides most things under Survival are fixed DCs. |

You probably want to add an addition "+" based on the natural armor of the beast. Its easier to skin a racoon than an armadillo. Make it : DC= 10 + HD of creature + Natural armor bonus. |

Besides most things under Survival are fixed DCs. well, I figured it more along the lines of since things increase in size with HD (and the more HD, usually the tougher they are, like the Nat armor bonus mentioned by type2demon), it would be harder/longer to do with more HD of the creature. |
| danielinthewolvesden03-26-07, 02:06 AM | For Survival you would only get a rough pelt, not one worth a lot of cash. To get max gps you would need a craft or profession. |
