| Peregrine_Wolf04-13-07, 05:03 PM | Am I correct that sniping is when you catch a foe flat-footed and then hit them with a ranged attack and then hide from them successfully? If so, then are they considered flat-footed on your next ranged attack? Need help, playing ranged character and I don't have ruels for sniping in my books, but there are feats like able sniper, which made me wonder...... |
| Grave_Accomplice04-13-07, 06:50 PM | As far as I know, yes. Unfortunately, the ability that makes sniping useful (Sneak Attack) isn't usable beyond 30 ft. Doesn't allow for much ranged sniping. |
| PhaedrusXY04-13-07, 06:55 PM | Flat-footed is not the correct term. You're talking about "denied Dex mod to AC". That is one of the consequences of being flat-footed, but they are not the same thing. Yes, defenders are denied their Dex mod to AC vs. invisible (and hidden) attackers. |
| j3st3r04-14-07, 12:50 AM | Note that you can hide while attacking but the attempt gets -20. Able sniper lessens this a bit. There's one way that I know of increasing the sneak attack range from 30' to 60' and that's a feat called Crossbow Sniper. Crossbows are usually considered lousier than composite bows (or even normal bows), but this feat actually makes the crossbow #1 ranged weapon for any rogue. |
| Kouk04-14-07, 04:30 AM | There is also the level 1 sorc/wiz, ranger, assassin spell "Sniper Shot", from the spell compendium that lets you sneak attack at any range with all your attacks for the round. Also a level 4 assassin spell that lets you sneak attack up to 60 feet with some other bonuses. |
| Fallenangel35904-14-07, 12:07 PM | Crossbow sniper adds 1/2 of dex mod to damage roll within 60 feet, and allows percision damage up to 60 feet. IF you snipe from 60 feet, they have a -6 to their spot check due to distance, and you have a -20 to your hide check from attacking. With able sniper, it reduces it to -16, and gives you a +2 on attack roll vs flatfooted targets that are atleast 30 feet away. Your first shot has a +2. 60 foot d8+1/2dexmod+enhancebonus+other fun bonuses. Can you sneak attack with exitwound weapons? :P |
| katarl04-18-07, 11:32 AM | Theres a few other ways to play a sniper, one is to use the 1st level spell (spell compendium) that allows you to take sneak attack at any range, another is to use the scout variant sniper from dragon, which allows you to add skirmish damage to any ranged shot if you don't move. There are other ways too, like playing an initiate of the bow. |
| Tsuul04-18-07, 03:34 PM | Sniping rules can be found under the Hide skill in the Players handbook. |
