| Magitek06-02-07, 02:59 PM | Does Flyby attack eliminate the need for Spring Attack or Shot on the Run while flying, or do I need both? It seems to cover everything the other two do (while flying), but with fewer prerequisites. Thanks in advance. |
| InkBlot06-02-07, 03:41 PM | That's correct. Flyby Attack can be used to make a melee attack while moving, or a ranged attack while moving, even if you do not have Spring Attack or Shot On The Run. Flyby Attack can also be used to move while casting a spell, manifesting a psionic power, initiating a martial manuever, activatint magic item, using a skill, or while doing anything else that only takes a standard action. The one advantage that Spring Attack has over Flyby Attack is that when you use Spring Attack you do not provoke an attack of opportunity for leaving your target's threatened area. |

Although, to be fair, that's why they invented Improved Flyby Attack (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/feats.htm#improvedFlybyAttack). :> |
| InkBlot06-02-07, 04:07 PM | Wow. Improved Flyby Attack is one of the most useless feats I've ever seen. There's no reason to ever take Improved Flyby Attack. You could just take Spring Attack. Spring Attack does everything Improved Flyby Attack does, has the same prereqs, qualifies you for Whirlwind Attack, and you can take it as a Fighter bonus feat. Dodge + Mobility + Spring Attack + Flyby Attack > Dodge + Mobility + Flyby Attack + Improved Flyby Attack edit: I'm sorry. There is one thing that Improved Flyby Attack has over Flyby Attack + Spring Attack. Improved Flyby Attack has no no BAB prerequisite. A flying character with poor BAB and enough bonus feats could get IFA before she could get Spring Attack. I don't know how she'd get all those feats before 9th level. Maybe a Raptoran who multi-classed at inopportune levels. Then of course with such shoddy BAB the only thing you could do with your IFA feat would be deliver touch attacks from spells/powers. |
| OrganicAngelAlexiel06-05-07, 04:51 PM | Actually, there is a very good reason to take flyby instead is if your DM houserules spring attack only to work on the ground. Been there, wasn't against me, and I snickered. |
| tarkin06-05-07, 05:34 PM | Some people gave some clear wrong answers. I will clarify: Shot on the Run: Attack in the middle of a move. No AoO protection. Ranged only Spring Attack: attack in the middle of a move, AoO protection. Melee only. Includes full powers of Shot on the run - but melee. Fly By Attack: ANY STANDARD ACTION, in the middle of a move. No AoO protection. If you have Fly By Attack then you do NOT need Shot on the Run. Must personally have a fly speed - not via a mount. Improved Fly By Attack: Fly By with AoO protection. Best feat of the set. Requires you to be able to FLY. If you have Spring Attack, it does not in ANY way stack with Fly By. Either you are doing a single melee attack in which case Spring Attack is all you need, or you are not, in which case Spring Attack does not help you. Great Fly By Attack: Very different feat. Can not 'stack' with any of the above. Must move in a straight line. Attack upto your Dex modifier in attacks, all at max BAB. Despite wierd wording, you get one one attack on them, damage is normal. They can't do AoO's on you. Ride By Attack: Spring Attack, using a charge, mount is protected from AoO's as well as yourself. Note, charge must roughly continue in straight line, pretend enemey can not block you. |
