Okay, what would the Sleight of Hand check DC be to steal someone's pants in under 5 seconds, while the person is wearing them? And of course, without being noticed.

If I were the DM... 60.

30 Difficult Task.
+ 10 Object is attached to target
+ 20 Without Notice

Then again, I'm a chronic houseruler.

I'd say it's pretty much impossible unless the person is sleeping, or at least lying down. Even then it's going to take a lot longer than 5 seconds to get them off.

Unless maybe the thief had a knife to cut part of the pants to take them from the side. That would ruin the pants of course.

I know it sounds hard to believe, but I am one of the rare geeks that actually have a girlfriend.

She likes tight clothing.

From practical experience, I can tell you that it takes more than 5 seconds to remover tight pants, even when she is HELPING me.

+20 for tight clothing.

That makes a DC of 80.

Too bad you never get to see her because you're always on the Wizard's Boards, eh Tarkin? :P :D

30 Difficult Task.

+ 20 Without NoticeSounds reasonable. It's in keeping with the epic DCs. (50 to swipe a weapon even if it's bigger than you, 80 to hide an entire person who's in plain sight)

I believed that the CO Boards jokingly pegged swiping your own pants without noticing required a DC 120 check. With a reduction in that DC if you were drunk. This was all in a thread on what to put into the pockets of others with Sleight of Hand, by the way. The Instant Fortress made an appearance there.

It's going to be next to impossible, so I agree with the earlier ideas on the DC.

I know it sounds hard to believe, but I am one of the rare geeks that actually have a girlfriend.

Awfully arrogant, aren't you?

One of the problems of internet communication is that subtle nuissances get lost.

Jokes in particular often get taken as serious.

That was the case here.

I was trying to make a joke about all of us geeks (and I am definitely a geek, if anyone was one), having a hard time getting girlfriends.

Perhaps it would have been clearer/less arrogant if I said "Currently I happen to have a girlfriend"

I sense a plural there... I've got a difficult time getting more then one girlfriend at a time too... I suspect that it is a DC35. :shifty:

This reminds of one of the old DND choose your own adventure books, where the rules intro compared ability scores to real and fictional characters. The 50 Dexterity (or 30 maybe) was the Waco Kid: in and out of room with your underwear without you realizing it.

Rules minutae:

Sleight of hand only works on "an object no larger than a hat or loaf of bread", and as far as "picking pockets" only allows you to "cut or lift a purse and hide it on your person" (pg 81). The rules don't otherwise define what may be lifte, though it's worth noting that you can't snatch (disarm) an "item that is well secured, such as a ring or bracelet".

I don't know about you, but my pants are larger than a loaf of bread or hat and usually well secured.
Rulebook

fold/roll your pants up neatly... they're about the size of a loaf of bread. but they -are- tightly secured i suppose.

i'd think a diplomacy check is more useful for getting somebody out of their pants anyway.

I'd say it's pretty much impossible unless the person is sleeping, or at least lying down. Even then it's going to take a lot longer than 5 seconds to get them off.

But this is D&D where every single class is expected to do impossible things at least once per encounter.

As for the original question... this is an opposed check. So :

DC of the theft itself is 50 (pants are at least as difficult to steal as a sheathed weapon which is DC 50 under epic uses), it should probably be higher but... eh.

The victim's spot check is at +40 (versus your roll) to notice you 'in the act' of stealing his pants at which point he would get an attack of opportunity. You could still steal his pants if he misses you or if you succeed your concentration check.

This is all roughly in line with the existing rules except the AoO which I think is entirely fair.

...This was probably not a very good DM, but I know a guy who had a character known as "Porgnome," pronounced "Pornome," who was an underwear thief. I remember one Epic++++++ encounter we were at (only reason the guy we were going up against was beaten was because he failed a saving throw cast by a goddess, which banished him to the ninth layer of hell), he managed to steal a Goddess's underwear, while she was wearing it. Rolled a nat 20 on his skill check, and with this DM, nat 20 is always a success, no matter what you're rolling for. So he has just managed to steal a goddess's underwear, and apparently becomes a god from doing so. I don't know what the exact mechanics of that were, and I'm not sure I want to know.

i'd think a diplomacy check is more useful for getting somebody out of their pants anyway.Or you could use Bluff. I remember seeing this video of a guy who would talk to his victim in a manner that's very distracting and the victim would follow instructions to "hand over your wallet" or "unbuckle your pants" thrown in between lines asking for directions and what nots. Can't seem to find a link to it now though...

Jokes in particular often get taken as serious.Perhaps it's not your style, but might I suggest use of emotes? Adding a :P or :D at the end of a sentence goes a long way into suggesting that the preceding line was intended as a joke or in a playful manner. It's not going to fill up all the nuances in tonal changes/inflections in speech to suggest what you're trying to put forth, but in the digital silence of the boards, it's the next best thing.

I do opposed checks. A strength based sleight of hand check vs balance check with a +10 bonus. Without being noticed? +20

No, no, no, you're looking at this all wrong. What KIND of pants are we dealing with? Heavy leather trousers? Definitely larger than a loaf of bread. Daisy dukes? Now that's a more manageable size. Granted, that's a more limited niche, and I'm not sure that the world of Greyhawk has ever heard of the exploits of the Duke Boys and their lovely cousin Daisy, but, you know, I'm just throwing options out there.

I'm jumping a carriage over the Old Creek Road bridge in the next campaign I play in.

Have you seen us kids today? None of our pants are secured very well. If we sneeze wrong we're liable to get in trouble for indecent exposure. I say the secured part of sleight of hand doesn't have to relate.

I can tell you quite well that I've been sleight of handed my pants off me before, and it took a moment for the breeze to make me realize it.

It was 3 years back, when I was a junior in highschool. I was at school after track practice, and there were 6 track girls sitting outside my locker, and I was standing there, talking to them. One girl who I didn't even know was currently on campus sneaked up behind me, and I generally wear pajama pants to track practices, due to their light weight, and warmth. Well, she depantsed me, underwear and all. Was dangling, and a sleight breeze (which is odd, because we were indoors, but it was a very, very long hallway) and awkward faces made me realize my pants were gone.

note, I didn't entirely lose my pants, as they were still at my ankles.

What an embarressment... lol
