Hello i am new to the boards and still kinda new to D&D. I have only rolled rog and sor so far, but i am thinking about rolling an Eye of Gruumsh. I have decided on feats but was wondering if there is a feat in some book that lets you use your Str modifier instead of your Dex? Kinda like how WFinesse switches str and dex.

if this has been asked alot before im sorry

thanx to any who help me.

Sorry, no such luck.

Not like you can't get every other stat to AC, though... ::grumble::

Ooooh, STR to AC http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/splarka/as-drool.gif How I'd love to abuse that.

Unfortunately, I don't believe it exists-those two things are too divergant. Dex makes sense to use in an attack because it allows you to pinpoint a vulnerable area, instead of just smack real hard like STR does. As far as physical stats go, CON would more likely get tied to AC (I'm thinking natural armorish), but I don't think that exists, either.

If it does, though...:D

There are two ways of getting CON to AC as far as I know. The Deepwarden PrC (Races of Stone) allows CON to AC instead of DEX and the Fist of the Forest PrC (Complete Champion) allows CON to AC as a monk's WIS to AC. These also stack.

Strength can help you deflect blows. A very strong person is able to block attacks with his weapon or shield that a weaker person could not. A feat could very well be made to use STR instead of DEX as a Dodge bonus to reflect this. Temper it by using the usual "doesn't work if you would be denied DEX bonus" limitation as well as only works against one melee opponent at a time. You could also add a feat such as Dodge, Combat Expertise, or Power Attack (for flavor) as a prerequisite, or put a high STR score as a prerequisite, say 17. That would match TWF's score prereq.

Great, thanks. http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/ruinkai/biggthumpup.gif

Good call. I didn't think of that.

There's the "Wall of Blades" manuver. Basically, you use an Attack roll for your AC and need to refresh the manuever afterwards.
There's also a feat that does something similiar, but it's not very good.

Yep, CantripN, it's called Melee Evasion and it's better than Wall of Blades in that you can use it every round (with WoB it would be once per encounter or every other round if you're a warblade), but it requires two other feats...so to each his own I guess...
There's also a higher level maneuver that lets you block the attack like WoB and redirect to another opponent...Manticore's Parry I believe...but that requires levels in warblade.

Well, even though I can't help you find a feat for this question, let me point you to a useful link:

X bonus to Y stat (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=320889)

This might answer some future ability synergy questions you have in the future. It's one of my favorite threads on these boards.

It would be a neat idea. In the Conan rpg, you can use it. Esentially you have two defence types, parry and dodge, parry uses strength and dodge uses dex. You can choose what you will use each round. (you can not use parry verse a ranged attack though.)

If your refering to Mongoose Conan, I've played it, it sucks. There are alot of problems with that game, loopholes and inconsitances(sp?) it seemed like they tried to make it into D&d but just threw it together over a weekend.
Anyway, I will say that the parry idea is a good concept for STR to AC but, scores are boosted enough to insane levels through manipulating the rules of differnet races, books, feats, ect such to the point that adding another way to boost a score would just be insane

In my option I think that one could attack to block an attack wich could add your str to ac.

Manticore Parry works on less attacks though. It is better in some ways and worse in others.

so far str is the only atribute that isnt added to armor.

i have a ridiculus char consept that i have been threatening to play involving a sorc monk(acetic mage feat) to add char instead of wiz. then take a lvl of ninja to get wiz again make sure to have the prereqs for fist of the forest (1 lvl and you have con.) then it is duelest for enough lvls to get the full int bonus(in 3.0 one was enugh but it has been nerfd). with all the penalties involved it isnt really worth the effort but then every stat boosting item would up your AC

There's an indirect way to get your STR factored into your armor.

It's called full plate. Look it up, I don't mind.

If your STR is lower than 15, then you're just NOT wearing that into battle, and it's a very nice boost to AC.

Yeah. I would guess that the reason strength isn't factored into AC is because the higher STR you have, the heavier armor you can wear, increasing your AC (although the max DEX bonus goes down). To the OP, if you have a low DEX anyhow, then wearing heavy armor isn't a problem in that regard.

I say make it a feat, as long as it doesn't stack with Dex, and doesn't work against ranged weapons, it isn't any more powerful than weapon finesse.

Brute Deflection

Req: Base Attack Bonus +1

Benefit: Your strength allows you to deflect and absorb the force of incoming blows. You may add your strength modifier in place of your dexterity modifier against melee attacks. This ability does not apply under any circumstances where you would normally be denied your dexterity bonus to AC. Due to the restrictiveness of armor, the max dex bonus applies to your strength modifier when used for defense.

The portion in italics is the real question. Not having the max dex limit makes it much more powerful but having it makes it almost useless except for barbarians and rangers.

One problem here is that Druids, along with a bunch of PrC's, such as Bear Warrior (CW), can get ridiculously high strength scores. The same is not true of any other stat.

All in all, a strength to ac feat could amount to roughly +15 AC for high level druids.

I'd put it in the Shield Specialization feat tree, perhaps under Shield Ward.

Improved Shield Ward: Shield Ward, Shield Specialization, Active Shield Defense, Improved Shield Bash, shield proficiency

When using a shield, you may gain your STR bonus to AC for 1 round after a successful shield bash attack.

Greater Shield Ward: requires Improved Shield Ward
Gain your STR bonus to AC whenever using a shield.

Nothing exists currently, and will be very unlikely to ever exist.

They don't overload STR with many additional feats (because it improves attack and damage), so the thought they would make it so STR helps attack, damage, defense all at the same time is not valid for balance reasons.

Sorry Quote box thing not working.......

I really like this.....
I have two home brew feats that would work great with this....

Armor Specialist
Req: Fighter level 4, Dodge
Fighter may choose one armor type, light, medium or heavy.
Benifit:
+1 to AC for Amror type +1 to armor Max dex bonus
Because of hours of fighting and training in that type of armor, the fighter is able to gain better protection from that armour
This bonus stacks with any two weapon or shield bonuses.

Armor Master
Req: Fighter level 10, Armor Specilization, dodge
Benifit
+1 to AC for Amror type, +1 armor dex bonus, -2 to armor check penalties.
Because of hours of fighting and training in that type of armor, the fighter is able to gain better protection from that armour
This bonus stacks with any two weapon or shield bonuses as well as armor specialazition

very nice... I like....

Not a very good idea. Even though you might piece together some kind of rationale behind this idea, it is simply unsuited for even a half-balanced game.

As it has been said before a quadzillion times, real-world mechanisms are a very bad idea to bring up as an argument in a fantasy games such as D&D.
Game balance, as questionable as it may be, MUST trump pseudo-realism - lest the game run totally out of bounds.

With the proposed feat, very high Str scores will become even more important for melee characters than they already are. Strength is good enough as it stands. Do not overload it that bad.

And no, this is not like Weapon Finesse. Said feat applies only to hit - and you're greatly limited with your weapon choice. And leaving the rediculously overpowered spiked chain out of the equation, you generally can't use Power Attack et. al. to its' full potential with it.

Yeah a friend and I had another look at it.
I still like the idea, but I would look at limiting it to once per round, or more likely once per combat.

Maybe even a requirement that you take damage from a melee attack to activate it for the next round.....

Otherwise it would be way to easy to abuse...
Somthing like this.

Brute Deflection
Req: Base Attack Bonus +1
Benefit: Your strength allows you to deflect and absorb the force of incoming blows.
If you take any damage from a Melee attack, You may add your strength modifier in place of your dexterity modifier against melee attacks for the next round.
This ability does not apply under any circumstances where you would normally be denied your dexterity bonus to AC for the round you apply your Str Mod to AC.

I think even this is to open for abuse.....
Any Ideas as to how to dial it down?
Please feel free to reword.....
