| BreegJac1706-21-07, 09:34 PM | Grapple it and roll a D20. If the enemy fails a fortitude save of 10 + your STR mod. they lose your HD in HP every round. Or maybe a Coup de grace in a pin after you've pinned for 2 rounds....( Can you even do that??) |
| Kouk06-22-07, 01:15 AM | Well, you could just do damage as normal and flavor it that you are choking the guy. The PrC Reaping Mauler gets an ability which says you are choking the life out of the guy, and you might knock him out. |
| JadeSpider964306-22-07, 04:56 AM | SUFFOCATION A character who has no air to breathe can hold her breath for 2 rounds per point of Constitution. After this period of time, the character must make a DC 10 Constitution check in order to continue holding her breath. The save must be repeated each round, with the DC increasing by +1 for each previous success. When the character fails one of these Constitution checks, she begins to suffocate. In the first round, she falls unconscious (0 hit points). In the following round, she drops to –1 hit points and is dying. In the third round, she suffocates. I'd say basicly it's the same progression as suffocation, although you could improvise the DC as a con check opposed by the strangler's strength check? to use a garrote, you'd have to first grapple and achieve a pin probably. same with using the hands most likely. |
| Knightblde06-22-07, 07:50 AM | Choking someone would just follow the normal grapple rules. Damage an Opponent option would count as choking. |
| Inigo Carmine06-22-07, 08:51 AM | I'd say basicly it's the same progression as suffocation Suffocation is the lack of air, strangulation is denying the brain fresh blood. The former can take a while, the latter takes much less time if done right. I agree with everyone else that grappling damage is perfect for this. As for the garrote, I would make it a two-handed tool that either: - gives you a bonus to grapple checks (say +4, with a MW one giving +6) or - increases your "grapple" damage to 1d6 (for a medium creature) or by 1 damage die, whichever is more beneficial (I don't want it to advance monks damage die by 2, that just seems like too much). Or, you could make it a lesser version of both of those benefits. |
| Mai_ariti06-22-07, 10:28 AM | When you are grappling, in addition to the other actions you can take, you may attempt to gain a strangle hold on your opponent by making a special melee touch attack . If you succeed at this special melee touch attack, you grab hold of your opponent's throat and can begin to strangle him on the next round. . . To strangle your opponent, you must win an opposed grapple check every round (made in place of an attack). If you use only your hands. . .you take a -4 penalty on the initial opposed grapple attack. . .you must us e both hands to strangle your opponent. . .A creature being strangled cannot attempt to pin an opponent, take an opponent's weapon, speak, or take any vocal actions. . . If you succeed at your strangle attempt, your opponent. . .can still hold his breath for up to 2 rounds per point of Constitution. . .After this time, the creature must make a DC 10 Constitution check to continue holding his breath. The save must be repeated every round with the DC increasing by +1 for each previous success. When the creature fails one of these Constitution checks, it begins to sufficate. . . Natural Armor applies on this attack, Full Plate gives a +4 bonus to AC, a leather collar (2 gp and 2 lbs, hardness 3 and 1hp) gives a +4 bonus to AC, and a gorget (10 gp and 5 lbs, Hardness 10 and 5 hp) gives a +10 bonus to Ac vs. a strangulation attempt. I hope this helps... |
| Leilond06-22-07, 10:30 AM | Grapple him and use the "damage your opponent" option with grapple The rules cover it. |
| zelf_gale06-22-07, 01:19 PM | I agree with the above posters that the grapple rules already cover strangulation with unarmed attacks. I would house rule that the garrote wire is a two handed exotic weapon, usable with weapon finesse, that replaces your unarmed strike damage in a grapple, and cannot be used outside of a grapple other than to make the touch attack to initiate a grapple. It would deal 1d4 slashing damage have 5 hardness and 2 hit points. (The reason the damage replaces the unarmed strike and is it so low is to keep it from increasing the power level of grappling monks. It also provides another option for other melee classes that doesn't necessarily outshine one of the monk's strong tactics.) Imagine a barbarian getting the jump on you with this? Kronk power attacks for full base attack bonus after raging easily succeeding on the touch attack and the grapple check dealing 1d4 + (Base Attack Bonus x 2) + (Raging Strength x 1.5). If you don't win the initiative Kronk gets to full attack on you with the garrote wile power attacking for full base attack bonus again before you act. |
| Egarb06-22-07, 01:28 PM | there are already rules for this in Song and Silence |
| Kouk06-22-07, 01:56 PM | About that excerpt from Dragon 335... really? I mean, they can still hold their breath as normal? That's like pinching their nose closed and covering their mouth, strangulation should be worse than that. "Don't worry guys, I've got this one in a stranglehold! Just another 20 rounds and he might have to start making Con checks!" |
| Mai_ariti06-22-07, 05:58 PM | Yeah... Still, it's better then WotC inventing completely illogical new scores you have to calculate for all your PCs to see how hard they are to strangle...actually, that's dumb enough I'm surprized someone didn't... |
