I am confused about skill synergies. do you get a +2 bonus for every 5 ranks in a skill or is it a one time bonus? I also don't undestand why professions don't have synergies? I think that 5 ranks in profession (sailor) should give a bonus to rope use and swim checks or profession (brewer) should give a bonus to craft (alchemy) and some sort of appraise check?

yes it is a one time bonus.

I have seen house rules that grant an additional +2 for ever additional 20 points, this was mainly for epic play, so at 25 ranks you get +4 and 45 ransks a +6.

I have used a houserule that grants a +1 synergy bonus for every 5 ranks, instead of +2 for having 5 ranks. I also used a houserule at the same time as this one that modified the aid rules so it was +1 per 5 points of the check.

I have also seen a house rule that grants a +2 at 5 ranks (like normal), an additional +2 at 15 ranks, another +2 at 30 ranks, another +2 at 50 ranks, etc...

It really only grants a max of +4 pre-epic, but that is nothing to complain about.

That's not a houserule. It's an actual rule.

I thought it was a rule, but I was scared to say so without taking the time to look it up, and I am in a lazy mood:)

Cobbling means practicing a shoemaker's trade , a stonemason lays cobblestones which is called paving:D

a miller turns wheat into flower, a millwright is the tradesmen who builds flour mills, watermills and windmills etc
