My friend says that you can take a feat without having the prereqs and it just doesnt go in effect untill you do.

example: would be taking natural spell at lvl 3 with a druid and it not working until he gets to lvl 5 and gains wildshape.

can you do this??

No this is not true. As per PHB Chaper 5:Feats. Prerequisites, p.87; you are required to have all the prerequisites prior to taking the feat, you can take the feat at the same time as you gain the prerequisite.

However if you already have the feat and lose one of the requirements, you cannot use the feat until you gain those requirements again.

Example, you cannot take Mounted Combat without the required Ride 1 rank being met.

Some DM's rule that even if you do not meet the prereqisites listed you can take the feat and use it when you meet those requirements. But not every DM does this. As far as known - The only way you can take a feat without meeting the requirements is if it specifically states so in the class - Ie Monk's can take Improved grapple even if they do not meet the requirement of Dex 13, or Stunning Fist without the BaB of +8 at first level.

Those prereqs may be designed to keep a character from getting them earlier that when a feat slot open up.

If a feat required 4th level spells as a prereq. that could be met at 7th level but a character will normally need to wait until 9th for feat to become available. This effectively makes the feat available later but leaves it accessable to a character who has done a little something else like take a level or two of fighter.

I've found a lot of DMs are willing to allow things like this especially for low level rogues. Because rogue's need +1 BAB to take weapon finesse especially. -Nick

Absolutly not.

Your character must have the indicated ability score, class feature, feat, skill, base attack bonus, or other quality designated in order to select or use that feat.

Like someone said earlier, if you lose a prerequisite at a later point, you do not lose the feat, simple lose access to its benefit.

Yeah, some of the +1 BAB prerequisites don't make a lot of sense.

Those +1 BAB feats are designed to make sure that warriors have access to those combat tricks earlier than other character types. Given the huge advantage in skill points taking rogue at level one gives having to wait until 3rd level to get your combat edge should be acceptable.
