Hey guys. I was looking into creating a mage that was food-oriented. Instead of potions of spider climb and bulls strength, he'd make them into candies and foods and that sort. I was thinking it'd be on the same means of a potion, and I heard whisperings of a feat for it from...Complete mage, I think it was. anyone know more?

The candle idea was used for a Prestige class in 3.0

Potions as enchanted fruit have been used before, both in 2nd edition and somewhere in 3.0 I beleive.

I'm pretty sure it was in The Tome and the Blood or Complete Arcane (or maybe somewhere else), but they gave some alternate items that would behave the same. The trick is to have the item behave in the same fashion, with just a different flavor. Some examples:

Scroll equivalents need to be single use, that cast a spell. They could be read from clay tablets, or the power could be released from a crystal.
Potion equivalents need to be usable by anyone as a standard action, and can hold a 3rd level spell or lower. The fruit tarkin suggested would work. Another I read was a tablet or small bone crushed under your heel.
Wand equivalents need to be usable by casters, and hold 50 charges of a spell level 4 or lower. They could look like staves, necklaces, or whatever, really.

Anyway, the point is, as long as it behaves the same way in game terms, then you can give whatever flavor you want, without changing the game.

Yeah, as long as they work the same way (level-limits, spell-trigger, spell-completion, etc.) then the same feats should apply.

MASTER OF THE WILD has a thing for druids called "Infusion"
by using stuff like mushrooms and berrys they make potions so i see no promblem if a mage wants hard candy the shape of a spider for spider climb
and in this way he can have them in a glass case and people would know what they kinda did just by looking and not haveing to know draconic or reading the label

It's either complete divine or Book of exalted deeds that has some alternate potion types... like wafers, breakable seals, etc.
I think that is the type of alternation potion type that would be like what you want to do.

We had a druid in our party famous for his pastries.
Some potion varients and some just pastries with Goodberries in/on them.

Thanks all. Much appreciated. Our DM is pretty lenient, so if I burn a feat to make food potions, he said I'd be ok. I mean, they still work just like potions...theyre just more unique.

Emphasis mine.

Tarkin, your reading skills are really off tonight. This is the second post of yours in the past hour I've seen with this kind of thing. Long day?

Why would you need to burn a feat when you are gaining nothing by the rules?

Well, in Tarkin's defence, the difference between "candies" and "candles" is the lowercase "i" and "l" (very similar looking). :P

I meant to burn the feat to create potions. And since it is a special extra, it may be worth another feat.

Thank you all, It's all been taken care of. I've been given the create magic food and drink feat in lieu of the brew potions feat. I thank you all for your help once again.

The DMG has an idea in the Magic Items section about alternatives to potions (for flavor if you'll excuse the pun). They talk about player using cookies/crackers in place of potions. I think it says that this is completely legitimate, just rename the feat from Brew Potion to Bake Cookies, and leave game mechanics the same (i.e. eating a cracker takes a move action and provokes an AoO)

in my opinion...its just the same as changing a fireball's ball apperance for a fire fist...it doesn't affect the spell in itself in any ways but looks better in some sort...
