I could see voice-throwing as a nasty intimidation, or evasion tactic for a rogue or similar class... but how would it work. Using the bluff skill is a given, but should it also require a feat? How should the check work?

Thanks for reading. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of answers I get.

Perform (Ventriloquism) would work. All it would cost are skill points.

Very cool idea. That makes more sense than my bluff check idea (especially because it cannot be defeated with sense motive).

I have another question, though. Would you have a maximum rang you could throw your voice, or would the check simply become more difficult for every five-foot square you distanced your voice?

Ventriloquism (as a skill) does not work like that.

The sound very definitely, and obviously, emanates from the ventriloquist. If you were standing next to Jeff Dunham (look him up on Youtube, it's worth it), and he did a ventriloquism bit, you'd know perfectly well where the voice came from.

Perform (Ventriloquism) would let you speak without moving your lips, but the odds of fooling anybody into thinking it wasn't you that made the sound is pretty slim.

It's merely a matter of suspension of disbelief that we pretend that the ventriloquist's voice comes out of the dummy; aided by the fact that we're either hearing it over a TV speaker or an auditorium PA, so all the sound does come from the same source.

What you want is the somewhat misnamed Ventriloquism spell.

I agree with Salla. Ventriloquism and voice-throwing are very different skills. Throwing your voice is so very different than any of the existing skills that it should be it's own (Int based). Also, learning how to do it is so difficult that it should require a feat, IMO.

Unfortunately, there are no existing mechanics in place that give you access to a skill only if you take a feat. So, how about this:

Voice Throw (feat):
While in an enclosed structure, such as a room or a cave, you can throw your voice up to 30 feet away with a successful Intelligence check which you may add your character level to. The DC of the check is 15 for 10', 20 for 20', and 25 for 30'. Anyone who sees your mouth move during your attempt is not fooled. You may also attempt, at the same time, a Profession (ventriloquism) check to keep your lips from moving.

Other options are:

Prestidigitation
Message to the Person you wish the sound to reach
Cast Magic Mouth in Location where you wish sound to emanate from, and then Cast Invisibility on the Magic Mouth
Use the Ventriloquism Spell (PHB) which throws your voice for 1 min/level

Not a feat, not relying on spells as a crutch, no--
Ventriloquism should be a New Use for Bluff. Many book have New Uses outlined, and from there you can gain a good idea of how to achieve what you want. When it comes to gaining bonuses though, it's likely that they will come from an associated skill trick.
