Ok, heres my question: Swordsage (ToB) has a proficiency with all simple and martial weapons. He also gets a class feature that grants Weapon Focus for all weapons of a martial discipline. Normally, to take weapon focus for a weapon, you need to be proficient with the said weapon. However, there are schools that have quite a few exotic weapons in their list (Shadow Hand for example, has sai, siangham and spiked chain). Now, does this mean that the swordsage is automatically granted a proficiency with said weapons, is not proficient, but gains the effect regardless (essentially, lessening the penalty to hit by 1) or does he not gain any benefit at all?

This was addressed (somewhere) by The Sage. You are granted WF for free, but still have no proficiency with weapons that you have no proficiency with. So if you use it, you have a -3 to hit, instead of the normal -4 for not being proficient.

Or you just house rule that they have the proficiency when they select discipline focus.

Either way works.
