hey, i was wondering if, other than for PrC prereqs, there was any reason to buy skill ranks tied to your discipline? for diamond mind and tiger claw (and probably shadow hand, but i haven't read much on that yet) there are maneuvers that require a skill check, but what about the others?

Some of the discipline-related feats also utilize the related skills.

In many cases, the skill also supports the use of the discipline's maneuvers in some way. Desert Wind relies on mobility, and Tumble helps you to stay mobile safely.

Diamond Mind and Tiger Claw gain the most direct benefit from their discipline skills and Diamond Mind also uses it for the Unnerving Calm feat. Desert Wind uses Tumble for mobility and Shadow Hand uses Hide for stealth, which is useful for some of their maneuvers. Setting Sun uses Sense Motive for at least one maneuver (Baffling Defense). Neither Iron Heart nor Stone Dragon get any real use out of Balance, nor does Devoted Spirit from Intimidate. White Raven doesn't use Diplomacy for any of their maneuvers, although their tactical feat uses it.

Desert Wind has that stance that gives you fire resistance based on your Tumble ranks.

so... it's like crusaders don't have to worry about them?

Not particularly, no. However, Diplomacy is a very useful skill, Intimidate can do some neat stuff with the new skill rules in ToB, and Balance will seem useless until somebody casts grease under your feet (making you flatfooted and unable to move unless you pass a Balance check) and then a rogue walks up behind you and carves out your spleen.

Balance is also useful in that sooner or later, you *are* going to end up on a precarious surface, and as a heavy armor user, that's a very bad thing - unless you've got lots of ranks in Balance. This is all the more so in that it's one where the checks might be reactive. With something like Jump, it at least requires you to choose to jump rather than to do something else, but a Balance check can hit you out of the blue (as is the case with Grease).
