I know it is frowned upon to rewrite established feats, but I did this for my game. If you would prefer, I can change the name to something else and note that it may take the place of Toughness in regards to prerequisites.

TOUGHNESS [GENERAL]

You descended from ancestors that lived in a rugged, mountainous land. You are particularly hard to kill.

Benefit: You gain +3 hit points. Further, you are immune to massive damage. In addition, when dying, you have a 25% chance to stabilize each round.

Normal: The chance to stabilize each round is 10%.

Special: If you have the feat Great Fortitude, you are immune to being Clobbered.

Note from Ellanon: We use the Clobbered variant in my game. This replaces Toughness in my games, however it may only be taken once, and only at 1st level. This was inspired by the Hardy Soul feat featured in Dragon Magazine.

RESILIENT [GENERAL]

You are tougher than tough. You are stone.

Prerequisites: Improved Toughness

Benefits: Every two hit dice you gain 1 extra hp. This is in addition to Improved Toughness.

Special: If you have Greater Fortitude, your Base Fortitude Bonus counts towards your hp. You may only take this feat once.

Example: At 20th level, Improved Toughness gives 20 bonus hit points. Resilient gives another 10 hit points for a total of 30. If you have Resilient and Greater Fortitude you'd gain 42 total hit points (given a "good" Fortitude save).

STOUT [GENERAL]

Vigorous, robust, rugged, hardy. These are the words used to describe you.

Benefit: This feat raises your HD to the next greater die. A d4 becomes a d6, a d6 become d8, a d8 become d10, a d10 becomes a d12. It applies retroactively. Just add 1 hp for each previous level.

Special: This can only be taken once. If you also have Resilient, the effects of Stout double - A d4 becomes a d8, a d8 becomes a d12, for example.

I don't remember who originally wrote this last feat, but I altered it a tiny bit to add a synergy.

Anyhow, what do you think?

If your campaign allows the Retraining rules from PH2, the Toughness feat from PH works just great. It's better than Improved Toughness for levels 1-2, then you retrain out of it at level 3.

There were several more Toughness feats in 3e. They were dumped in 3.5e, probably because the game isn't balanced around characters with massive HP.

The entire reason it is frowned upon to redo existing feats is to STOP people from letting them take the place in pre-reqs.

Feats like toughness are INTENDED to be sucky, so that people can create Prestige Classes that will force you to take a sucky feat.

This is part of the balance of the game - if you are forced to take a sucky feat, then it allows the game designer to do give you something extra cool.

If you want something to be useable as a pre-req for things toughness is used as, it should not be significantly more powerfull than toughness.

-------------------

Resielient is good.

So is Stout, but problematic for Barbarians (1d12, upgraded becomes 1d14????)

Your alteration needs some work;

Either
a. Make it not retroactive AND have a pre-req of at least 8th level, or
b. give it a high pre-req, like say 16th level.

Improved Toughness demonstrates one feat should be around 1 hp/level, not two. A feat that is 2 hp/level (as your synergistic Stout is), is almost an Epic feat, and needs to be pre-reqed appropriately for it's power.

Ok, how about this then...

RUGGED [GENERAL]

I'm running out of adjectives. LOL

Benefit: You are immune to massive damage. In addition, when dying, you have a 25% chance to stabilize each round.

Normal: The chance to stabilize each round is 10%.

Special: If you have the feat Great Fortitude, you are immune to being Clobbered. This may only be taken once, and only at 1st level.

As for Stout, it wasn't intended for Barbarians as there is no progression beyond d12 (and I am certainly not going to authorize a barbarian to progress into a d20 for hit points).

How's this change. Rather than a level restriction, how about making the big bonus require two other feats?
