Consequently does it take intelligence to try to trip someone using a tripping weapon if they fail to trip you? (I tried to trip a deionichus (sp?) with my spiked chain, failed, and they dm said it attempts to trip me using my chain; I didn't think a creature with a 2 intelligence would be capable of such an act) |
| AAB06-14-07, 11:11 AM | yes, they can. think of it as you wrapping your chain around some part of its body (could be anywhere) and it pulling back really hard. unless you drop your chain you're tipping over. |
| runestar06-14-07, 11:29 AM | I agree with AAB. The opposed trip check is quite different from making an AoO, so I think that the normal rules for tripping do not apply here. Consequently does it take intelligence to try to trip someone using a tripping weapon if they fail to trip you? (I tried to trip a deionichus (sp?) with my spiked chain, failed, and they dm said it attempts to trip me using my chain; I didn't think a creature with a 2 intelligence would be capable of such an act) Maybe you could think of it as something instinctive? You wrap your chain around its leg and try to trip it by yanking back on the chain. But it resists by pulling its leg back and you are pulled forward by the sudden force. Obviously, if you let go of the chain, you won't be tripped in the process. |
| Kouk06-14-07, 11:29 AM | Yes you can be tripped back, that's why you can drop the weapon to avoid it. This is gone over in the Rules of the Game article All About Trip Attacks. As to how an animal would think to do that, no idea. |
| tarkin06-14-07, 11:37 AM | The overpulling is a good description. The animal does not need to think. You wrap your chain around their legs and pull towards yourself. They pull back away from themselves. Usually you win and they trip (if not, then you are picking the wrong targets to trip) Sometimes they win and pull you forward off balance. ------- Real life example, close to what I described above. Weapon = fishing rod with hook. Usually you pull the fish out of the water. But occasionaly, you hook a really big fish, and if you don't let go of your rod, you get pulled into the water. |
