Trying to reintroduce Scry without a 3.0 PHB [Archive] - Wizards Community

The topic is pretty self-explanatory.

My group and I have agreed to allow Scry to return as an available skill, partly due to certain casters (NPC and PC) using divination magic and a Mirror of Mental Prowess with nigh impunity. We figured that the Scry skill would make scrying and Arane Eye-ing much more risky. Trouble is, the person with the 3.0 PHB has been gone for months now and apparently can no longer be reached. Perhaps a poor rules decision on our part, trying to re-introduce old rules without the rulebook, but we're looking for info.

We have some basic information, namely that Arcane Eyes could be detected with Scrying (or an INT check), and that Scrying spells existed in addition to the items that allow for remote viewing. But this is hardly comprehensive.

There is a "Greater Scrying" spell, but is there a lesser variety and do it's DC's differ? Are there other spells that utilized Scry or would be affected by Scry? Did certain items (yes, we have no 3.0 DMG either) confer bonuses to Scry checks or different DC's? Was there a way one could make Scry checks to look back through the sensor or dispel it? Does Dispel Magic even work on a sensor?

Anyone remember how to run this skill, or have a link to a sizeable, relevant piece of 3.0 SRD?

Scry (INT; BARD, CLERIC, DRUID, SORCERER, WIZARD ONLY)

Check: The character can't use this skill without some magical means to scry. Use of this skill is described in association with those spells and items. These items allow the character to spy on others, and this skill just lets the character do it better. This skill also improves the character's chance to notice when the character is being scried, as detailed in the descriptions of the arcane eye and detect scrying spells.

Special: Although this skill is exclusive to certain classes, it can be used untrained. This means that a character with no ranks in Scry, and who is not allowed to buy ranks in this skill, can still make an Intelligence check to notice when he is being scried.

Scrying
Divination
Level: Brd 3, Clr 5, Drd 4, Sor/Wiz 4
Components: V, S, M/DF, F
Casting Time: 1 hour
Range: See text
Effect: Magical sensor
Duration: 1 minute/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

The character can see and hear a creature, who may be at any distance. The character must succeed at a Scry check to do so. The difficulty of the task depends on how well the character knows the subject and what sort of physical connection (if any) the character has to that creature. Furthermore, if the subject is on another plane, the character gets a –5 penalty on the Scry check.

Knowledge DC
--------- --
None* 20
Secondhand (the character has heard of the subject) 15
Firsthand (the character has met the subject) 10
Familiar (the character know the subject well) 5

*The character must have some sort of connection to a creature the character has no knowledge of.

Connection Scry Check Bonus
---------- ----------------
Likeness or picture +5
Possession or garment +8
Body part, lock of hair, nail clippings, etc. +10

This spell creates a magical sensor located near the subject. Any creature with Intelligence 12 or higher can notice the sensor by making a Scry check (or an Intelligence check) against DC 20.

The character may cast the following spells through a scrying spell: comprehend languages, read magic, tongues, and darkvision. The following spells have a 5% chance per caster level of operating correctly: detect magic, detect chaos, detect evil, detect good, detect law, and message.

Wizard, Sorcerer, or Bard Focus: worth at least 1,000 gp.
Cleric Focus: worth at least 100 gp.

Any creature with Intelligence 12 or higher can sense the arcane eye by making a Scry check or an Intelligence check (DC 20). Spells such as detect scrying can also detect the eye.

If the scrying attempt originates within the area, the character also knows its location. If the attempt originates outside this range, the character and the scrier immediately make opposed Scry skill checks (a creature without the Scry skill can make an Intelligence check). If the character at least matches the scrier’s result, the character gets a visual image of the scrier and a sense of the scrier’s direction and distance from the character (accurate to within one-tenth the distance).

Greater Scrying is the same, apart from this:

You may cast the following spells reliably through the sensor: comprehend languages, darkvision, detect chaos, detect evil, detect good, detect law, detect magic, message, read magic, and tongues.

Is this what you're looking for?

You do realize that the reason they Removed the skill was to make it HARDER to scry.

In 3.0 Scry was a skill that almost no one had, so people that had it could pretty much scry at will with no chance of being detected.

In 3.5, Scry takes a save, and LOTS of people have good saves, so chances are many people will be detectable.

If you really want to reduce the chances of someone scrying on you:

1. Burn clothing/body parts you throw away.
2. Boost your Will save

If the above is not enough, I suggest you make an item of Non-detection

Finally, if none of the core methods are enough, I could see creating a FEAT (not a skill) that makes it easier to detect scrying.

Something like this:

Paranoid
From long practice, you have become adept at noticing invisible sensors. You gain a +3 bonus to any will save agaisnt scrying. In addition, you are always on guard and the slightest breeze makes you think you are being spied upon. You routinely look for those invisible sensors, even when they are not present. This means that when someone DOES actually spy on you, you automatically get a free spot check at +3 to detect the sensor. However, you get many false alarms, so others do not always believe you when you say "We are being spied on".
