Hi,

I was wondering, when you use the tumble skill, is your whole movement at 1/2 your speed or only the squares in which you tumble?

The reason I'm asking is that Cityscape has a feat called Swift Tumbler (page 64) that strongly suggests that your whole movement is at 1/2 your speed.

Thanks,

It is officially your whole movement, however it is a very common (and I believe FAQ endorsed) house rule that only the squares you tumble through count.

Yeah you're right, it is in the FAQ...

I'm not satisfied with the answere :D. In short it says 'no but it's ok to rule otherwise'...

It is officially your whole movement...It is officially no such thing.

It should also be noted that Tumble worked much the same way (as the FAQ says is permissible) in 3.0. That is, when you tumbled as part of a move action, you could tumble up to 20 feet as part of that move. That 20 feet could be broken up however you liked within that move action. (So if you had a land speed of 50, for example, you could move 10 feet, tumble 5 feet, move 15 feet, tumble 10 feet, move 5 feet, and tumble the last 5 feet.)

In short it says 'no but it's ok to rule otherwise'...That is not what it says. It says it's "easiest" to apply the half-speed penalty to the entire move. In other words: "Your DM may not be too bright, and may be intimidated by the 2nd-grade math skills that are needed to calculate how far you can move while tumbling. We don't want to come right out and say he's wrong if he chooses to use the 'easiest' method instead...but yeah, he's wrong."

Tumble isn't only acrobatics moves. It doesn't mean your doing back flip while moving. The feat allow you to move normal speed on a square which is half move. like when you have grumble on the floor. So it's actually making you move faster. It could have been name "swiftness of the feet and dexterity" but tumble is shorter and more generic because it also allow to do other things.
