Hey, stupid question, but I'm confused about how tumbling into combat and attacking works. can you tumble past and attack at the same time? or do you have to attack then tumble?

Tumbling is usually a part of Movement, which typically requires Move Actions. With no special feats, you can only move first, then attack, or else you can attack first and then move. You can make a full attack and not move except for a 5ft step, or you can double move and not attack proactively (AoOs can still be taken by you).

If you take Spring Attack, you should be free to Tumble, attack, and then move or Tumble some more (but then you don't really need to anyway with Spring Attack).

You still need to tumble if you move through other threatened squares (other than the target) else provoke attacks of oppertunity.

Unless you want to look cool while doing it!

Plus Spring Attack only ignores your target's threatened squares, not it's allies.
