The D20Modern Acolyte advanced class allows a character with eight levels of acolyte (and at least three levels in another class) to turn outsiders as undead, except that the turning cannot end in the Acolyte destroying or commanding the outsider. All other turning rules apply.

I get the feeling this ability was added mainly to make exorcism scenes possible by the rules, but I wanted to know how well this would work in D&D.

Would it have to be a feat, or is it harmless enough to just give to anyone with turn undead at a certain point?

Thanks!

There are PrCs dedicated to this sort of thing. Specifically the Sacred Exorcist from CDiv. But that's the exorcism thing. As for turning, there's either a variant for turn under, a domain power, or a feat or PrC for that. Give me a sec.

In an issue of Dragon the Sentinel, Netral Good Paladin variant had the class ability to turn Outsiders instead of undead.

Muahaha! I found it! Planar Turning (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Planar_Turning,all) from the ELH.

Ah, wow, an epic feat... Thanks for the find, I suppose that, although the limited usage is balanced in D20Modern, it's probably not in D&D.

There are a lot of outsiders, especially at higher levels in D&D. I don't know about D20 Modern though, I've never played.

Outsiders are rare in D20Modern, as are magical beasts and undead. Again, an Acolyte doesn't gain the ability to command/destroy magical beasts or outsiders, but he can chase them off essentially. "BE GONE, DEMON!" sort of thing.
