| Greco08-27-07, 05:13 PM | No. Unless the Great Sword is not a part of your weapon profiency(-4). TWF has no effect on 2-handed weapons, only if using a double weapon. |
| Agroth522308-27-07, 05:17 PM | Okay, with that out of the way, would that be the same for using a one-handed weapon that is one size category larger than you, being that you would have to wield it two-handed? Yes, weapon proficiency was taken into account. |
| Greco08-27-07, 05:35 PM | TWF penalties only apply when fighting with two weapons. Depending on your DM using the weapon size variants. A long sword for a large creature is treated as a Great Sword for Medium characters, but generally there is a size penalty depending on how many size categories above medium size weapons for meduim characters. |
| Agroth522308-27-07, 06:38 PM | How about for a weapon that doesn't require me to use two hands, such as a long sword, but I do anyway for additional damage? Also, say I have a Longsword drawn. Can I use the Quickdraw feat to draw my secondary light weapon to use my TWD feat against a melee attack? I'm only asking this rediculous series of questions because my DM is continously trying to keep me from becoming more powerful than his character(yes, my DM is playing a character as well) and refuses to listen to me when I tell him that there aren't any penalties for using a weapon two handed if you have the TWF feat. My DM is the kind of person that comes up with an idea for a character, makes it, and realizes, after seeing what my character can do, that his character is under-powered compared to mine. He's got to have some kind of superiority complex or something, you know what I mean? Nobody's character can be more powerful than his, and he seems to think that he can get away with all different kinds of illegal moves like moving his animal companion and himself at the same time so an enemy would be flanked for both his and his companion's attacks. I cought him on it and he tried to tell me that the character's animal companion goes on the same turn as the character. I told him,"No, the animal companion goes on Initiative, before, or after it's master. Pick one!" |
| war_thog08-27-07, 07:10 PM | Well on the animal companion note it wouldnt be unreasonable to say that you move together. The intent is that these things all happen together after all...... just that in a turn based system that isnt possible. As long as he treats all animal companions, summons, etc in the same way then i dont think there would be a problem with house ruling that. On the TWF point why do you wield a weapon 2 handed at all? Do you charge with your longsword then bust out 2 wep in round 2 or something? But yeah hes being silly. 2 wep fighting specifies 2 different weapons. Your off handed and main handed one. You cant have 2 of those in the one weapon *except doubles but theyre special* and so the rules applying to 2 weapons dont apply. After all you arent getting extra attacks withy our longsword nor are you wielding it independently in each hand. You cant use 2 wep def in response to an attack as its a free action, not an immediate action so you can only do it in your turn. Could do it after your attacks for the turn but i dont know why you wouldnt want to have it out at the start and get the extra attacks. |

Okay, so free actions can only be used during your own turn and not your opponents. I wasn't aware of that, I'll have to ask my DM if he is, I doubt it, even thought it's in the PHB. The reason I wouln't have both weapons drawn is because I don't like to take attack penalties at low level for it. Typically I will if I'm in total defence, waiting for poison to take effect or in danger of dieing. |

You should use a double weapon... it does just what you want, lets you easily switch between 2HF for better damage per hit and low penalties, and TWF for higher total damage. And you would get your TWD bonus all the time. (You're wielding a double weapon, whether you are TWFing with it or not.) |
| Nephlite08-27-07, 10:16 PM | I have the TWF Feat and wielded a Greatsword, in both hands, would I take any attack penalties? TWF'ing is for 2 weapons. This has no effect. Unles you are TWFing with greatsword + armor spikes (a second weapon): you can't use TWF feat or the ability. However, with a 2 handed weapon you get 1.5 Str bonus. So rejoice. Okay, with that out of the way, would that be the same for using a one-handed weapon that is one size category larger than you, being that you would have to wield it two-handed? Yes, weapon proficiency was taken into account. Do you have Monkey Grip? No? Than using a large longsword must be 2 handed takes -4 penalty to hit. With monkey grip it is -2 penalty and 1 handed. How about for a weapon that doesn't require me to use two hands, such as a long sword, but I do anyway for additional damage? You get to add 1.5 Str same as all weapons used 2 handed. The reason I wouln't have both weapons drawn is because I don't like to take attack penalties at low level for it. Typically I will if I'm in total defence, waiting for poison to take effect or in danger of dieing. Holding 2 weapons does not count as Twfing. You can hold a shield for defense and take no penalties (otherwise Sword and board style really sucks): same with weapons. When you tell the DM I am attacking with both attacks: than you take penalty. Example: I am holding longsword and shortsword with BAB +1. I move up to enemy and attack with longsword only: no penalty as only longsword. Next turn I full attack with one attack longsword and the off hand attack with short sword. I'd have TWF feat or big penalties when I did use both, but you get the idea. |
