The first would talk about ability scores (the most awful misnomer in all of D&D), and prereq feats, class abilities, what have you. The second would talk about what dexterity score you must have as you try to activate the feat, or what kinds of armor you can be wearing, etc. [What's also neat about that is that it could present new ways of shutting down certain builds as imminently viable combat tactics: A bunch of goblin sorcerors all train their Rays of Enfeeblement on the big beefy fighter, hoping that the best of the strength penalties would be enough to shut down power attack and cleave and Great Cleave. I mean, ouch. You hit a guy with enough negative levels, maybe he doesn't qualify to use that feat he's been using to kick your ass for the past few rounds. Indirect combat is a very, very cool thing. I'm considering a design paradigm for all BBEDs from now on: They have basically infinite hit points and can only be beaten indirectly. Or perhaps there's a niiice XP reward for beating him indirectly in the way that I've designed or in some new and clever way, a combination of Puzzle and Boss.] I can think of several famous debates that would be settled instantly, and instead of memorizing some principle, it might be easier to just explicitly state what's what. I vastly prefer this over nebulous phrases like "lose the benefits of this feat". |

Thus the 13 str needed for power attack ... if you ray a guy down to 12, then no more power attack, cleave, great cleave, etc. A two weapon guy that you drag to 14 dex suddenly can't fight with two weapons ... or rather (s)he doesn't get the benefit of two weapon fighting, they can still fight with two weapons just with the huge penalties. |
