Can a rogue with UMD skill cast spells from arcane scrolls using his charisma as his minimum casting stat? (eg a sorcerer must have minimum charisma 11 to cast 1st level spells). Or would he have to use intelligence (like a wizard). It seems to me there is no bar to using charisma (which is handy since it's also the UMD stat).

Also, it appears that using scrolls in armour means you have to make arcane spell failure chance rolls. Anyone have a way of avoiding this, besides (i) not wearing armour, (ii) mithril (iii) twilight enhancement..?

1) Yes (although there's a handful of spells that are wizard only). But the trickier one is divine scrolls... rogues often have a decent Int, Cha or both, but usually wisdom is not so good.

2) No, ASF simply applies. The easiest solution is to not plan on using scrolls in battle, and to take your armor off when you want to use one out of combat.

In fact, if it's a bard-only spell you must emulate it using Cha, since you're emulating the bard class. For Sor/Wiz scrolls, you can choose to emulate either a sorcerer (Cha) or a wizard (Int), whichever you prefer. The scroll doesn't care what class scribed the scroll, only arcane/divine, spell level, and caster level. To activate it, you need a sufficient caster level and the spell on your class list, so you can pick any class with the spell on the list and then make the "emulate caster level" (ie "use scroll") check as appropriate.

Thanks guys for your comments, and good idea Jaelis about out of combat scrolls. By the way Nom, I am from NSW too (blue mountains)

Sorry guys but you don't have to have ability scores to cast off of scrolls. Now it does say that you have to have 10 + spell level on the score but if you don't have that you can emulate that ability score by minusing 15 off your check. Having the right score helps but not a must have like with casters.

favored soul (complete divine) use charisma to cast divine spell... That's an excellent point, Mastel. Scrolls are either arcane or divine. That is, they're not tied to the actual class of the person who scribed them. So you should be able to pick an ability that works for that particular type (arcane/divine) and specific spell among all the possible appropriate classes.Use a Scroll

... In addition, casting a spell from a scroll requires a minimum score (10 + spell level) in the appropriate ability. If you don’t have a sufficient score in that ability, you must emulate the ability score with a separate Use Magic Device check (see above). With Sorcerers, Bards, and Favored Souls you can select Charisma as the appropriate ability for most spells; that's helpful because Charisma is the skill you need for UMD. I think Ranger/Druid exclusive spells will still need Wisdom, and Assassin-only spells will still need Intelligence. But maybe not. There are hundreds of classes out there now. Are there some classes that can cast Ranger, Druid, or Assassin spells using different abilities? Let us know.

I thought favored souls still used Wisdom to determine if they could cast a spell, but used Cha for the save bonus. Do I have that backwards?

Actually jaelis you did have that backwards. It's Cha to determine if a spell can be cast and Wis to determine how hard it is to resist. Check page 8 of Complete Divine.
