Can you use the Use Magic Device skill to emulate having a spell on one's spell list?

In other words, can a wizard with use magic device cast bard spells from a Runestaff?

I would appreciate some quote in the Use Magic Device description or FAQ or something.

Thanks,

As far as I understand, only if you have a device that allows you to cast bard spells, such as a scroll. Thus the name of the skill. :)

I had forgotten to mention with a Runestaff :D.

I fixed my post for your convinience.

A wizard with UMD could cast a bard spell from a runestaff, but he'd have to sacrifice a spell of equal level to power it.

Which part of the Use Magic Device skill would you be using? Emulate Class Feature?

And what would be the Save DC, or the Caster Level? Would the caster level be your level or your check - 15? What would the save DC be, 10 + Spell Level + Int modifier or 10 + Spell Level + Cha modifier?

Thanks

Personally, I would treat it as a spell trigger item, and you'd get the minimum caster level. But there are no rules for how runestaffs interact with UMD, so its really up to the DM.

(I only say that UMD can be used at all because there have been extensive arguments about it, and customer service indicated that it should work the way I described.)

I kind of had expected that :D.

Thanks for your help.
