Maybe my poor brain can't grasp the long-term uses for it, but what possible reason would a Samurai need concentrate? I have seen some other "fighter" based classes with the same ability. What am I missing out on?

Samurai don't cast spells do they?

Sorry if this is blatantly obvious but I just don't see it.

I think the designers threw it in to make it seem like the samurai is very focused. No the samurai does not cast spells. The only fighter-based classes that actually use it are psychic warrior, because of their powers and psionic focus, and the TOB classes, for the Diamond Mind School.

It is probably for the flavour aspect.

Monks get concentration as well, despite not casting any spells (or even getting any SLAs they may need to cast defensively with).:P

it's not soley the province of casters:
if you are performing a complex action, typically Disable Device , Open Lock, and the like, you may need a Concentration check if you come under fire, etc. failing that, it foils that task at hand. i know that's listed in the book, most other cases are few and far between but i would venture some of the following, notably if you're under attack or a major distraction occurs:

-Wild Empathy to maintain rapport, of course the distraction might spook critter
-perhaps some Profession and Craft rolls. i've used this before as my g/f's cleric has Profession: Scribe. hard to write out super important plot hook 'x' when you're being attacked, bombarded w/ distracting noise/FX, etc.
-Performance maybe. not all, but some.
-Spell recoup and meditation. big one, that. every incidental violent encounter tacks on another hour to mage for "proper rest" if camping out and so forth. if he can Concentrate to maintain trance while PCs ward of typical EL, etc., he might be unmolested.

as for samurai, i suppose it has practical applications, but i think it's implied in the zen-like qualities inherit in some practioners of Bushido. fluff/filler basically.

Use it to substitute for Iajitsu Focus, and you'll be fine.

The kensai from CW has a class feat that allows a concentration check instead of a save.

It's also handy when you multiclass. You can keep increasing your Concentration modifier without the double cost.
