| tundrawalker09-09-07, 08:45 AM | Hey guys. Is there a feat that allows you to use a two-handed weapon in one hand? I am about to build a Two-weapon Fighting Dervish. I really like the Elven Court Blade but it is a two-handed weapon. Is there a feat that allows it to be used with one hand? If not, what would the penalty be for using it one handed? Monkey grip is a similar feat but I don't think it allows me to do what I am attempting. Thanks. |
| war_thog09-09-07, 09:32 AM | You can't do it with elven courtblade. You could with a large thinblade with monkey grip. Though why you would want to do that instead of get a scimiatr is beyond me. Less feats and dervish lets you treat it as light for 2-wep doesnt it? Just monkey grip that. Dmg slightly less but higher attack bonus when 2-wep and less feats. Actually you could use a courtblade one handed if you were a goliath or had the "strongarm bracers" i think they are. But those options have obvious drawbacks. |
| EjoThims09-09-07, 09:42 AM | Don't take monkey grip. It sucks. Don't use Oversized TWF. It sucks. Use the Elven Thinblade and Elven Lightblade if you want to go that route with TWF. |
| war_thog09-09-07, 10:18 AM | Scimitars are better for his Dervish character due to the Light "scimitar" ability though. And unless your an elf those will cost 2 feats. |
| Knightblde09-09-07, 12:54 PM | Get the Strongarm Bracers. You will then be allowed to use a Medium Elven Court blade in one hand, and a Medium Elven Thin Blade in your off hand suffering the normal penalties for a One Hand weapon and a Light weapon. There is a heated debate about this in another thread, but I still stand by this ruling. |
| EjoThims09-09-07, 03:04 PM | You'd still have a -2 penalty for using a 2H weapon in one hand, knight. Using a Large Thinblade and a Large Lightblade, however, works just fine. And yes, scimitars are far better for the Dervish, but I figured he'd want to stay in the Elven Xblade family. |
| tundrawalker09-09-07, 07:19 PM | Well, I wanted to stay in the Elven Courtblade as it is 1d10, weapon finessable and power attackable. Problem is it has to be used in two hands so it won't work with multi-weapon fighting. What I am trying to do, which may not work is have a multi-weapon fighting Dervish with multiple Elven Courtblades. |

And yes, scimitars are far better for the Dervish, but I figured he'd want to stay in the Elven Xblade family. I feel that you are incorrect. The Strongarm bracers make it so that you don't incur the -2. They let you use Large and Medium weapons, not just one or the other. |
| EjoThims09-09-07, 08:29 PM | The Strongarm bracers make it so that you don't incur the -2. They let you use Large and Medium weapons, not just one or the other. Yes, but nothing in their description nor in any ability elsewhere in the game (at least that I know of) lets you use a two-handed weapon in one hand without the -2 penalty. |
| war_thog09-09-07, 08:32 PM | Id depends if you are using the "weapon size equivalent" variant in the DMG or not. If you do then a large longsword = a greatsword *or eleven version of each* If not then a large longsword and a greatsword are different things. One is large 1-hand. Other is medium 2-hand. However having strongarm bracers be the only way you can use your weapons is not a reliable idea. For something as central as your main fighting skill you dont wnat to be relying solely on magic to do it. You'd be le ****ed if something disrupted that. If you are playing the equivalency thing *which i do* then monkey gripping a courtblade would work. However you wont ever hit anything. -6 on all attacks? Its a cool idea, 2 massive swords, ive seen it done before, it's a scary thing to see RP wise. *friend had a hipogriff riding man with 2 great swords*. But very intensive in feat cost and abilities and such to make it so you can actually hit things. |
| Antimyth09-10-07, 04:20 AM | Couldnt one take the Elven court blade at the small size and wield it as a one handed weapon? Correct me if im wrong. |
| war_thog09-10-07, 07:09 AM | Why would you want to do that? The intent is to have a big weapon. And you still take a -2 for it being the wrong size. That -2 goes up and down. |
| Knightblde09-10-07, 07:22 AM | Yes, but nothing in their description nor in any ability elsewhere in the game (at least that I know of) lets you use a two-handed weapon in one hand without the -2 penalty. Bracers allow you to wield Large and Medium weapons at the same time with no penalty. If you count as Large, as SB state, then you can wield a two hander in one hand. The fact that you can still wield medium weapons makes it so you don't take the penalty. The shear fact that you could wield an large elven thinblade with all the same stats as a medium elven courtblade assures it is not 'broken'. All it does is gives you options. For something as central as your main fighting skill you dont wnat to be relying solely on magic to do it. You'd be le ****ed if something disrupted that. I have taken the 'build' a little further. I use a Double Sword with morphing and sizing on both ends. That allows me to turn it into any two handed weapon of any size that I wish. The double weapon allows me to morph one set of magic, from either end, for use when I wish. One end is vampiric and brilliant, while the other has sunder and collision. This again allows me more options, as these normally do not stack. If I am in an antimagic field or the like, everything goes back to a medium weapon that I can use without penalty. |
| Bopple09-10-07, 10:36 AM | No. You don't take penalty, only when you use a medium weapon as normal for your size. Wielding a 2h weapon in 1 hand is not normal for a medium-sized character. This is the second thread i found, in which you are spreading the misinformation. Stop it please. |
| Frugal09-10-07, 10:45 AM | Bracers allow you to wield Large and Medium weapons at the same time with no penalty. If you count as Large, as SB state, then you can wield a two hander in one hand. The fact that you can still wield medium weapons makes it so you don't take the penalty. You can't have it both ways at the same time. It's a medium 2-handed weapon, which means if you're medium you have to wield it with 2 hands and can't wield it in 1 hand. If you're able to wield large weapons you can wield it in 1 hand but at a -2 for being inappropriately sized weapon, the penalty is from changing the handedness. I'd also point out that depending on the wording for the bracers (I don't have MIC) you might not even be able to wield a medium 2-handed weapon in this way. |
| tundrawalker09-10-07, 05:01 PM | Thanks for the thoughts. I now think I am changing my build away from TWF with two-handed weapons as it is too difficult. The strongarm bracers are great though. Now I am thinking of using 2 large schimitars with the Dervish. With the strongarm bracers and the Dervish special ability, they are still considered light for weapon finess but can still be used to Power Attack. Thanks for the suggestion. Now need to find a Large race with no LA.:D |

You end up like any other fighter whose weapon suddenly turned mundane, at least you can still wield it. If his bracers die, he cant even heft his sword. |

Safer to actually be able to still wield your weapons when youre in a tight spot. From an RP PoV.... to me itd be a point of pride that you can heft your own sword without magical assistance. |
| tundrawalker09-10-07, 07:52 PM | War thog, I hear you but I think it would look totally cool for a regular size dude to haul out two large swords and start hacking. I do not think the DM would wreck the character concept by destroying the bracers. If I thought he would, which would in essence completely ruin the enjoyment of the time it took to create the character and then the build would be shot, I wouldn't even play in a game with him. I still am not sure I will go that route but the coolness of it is calling to me. |
| moriarty1309-11-07, 08:12 AM | Large scimitar is only 1d8 damage instead of 1d6. Who cares? Average 1 damage isn't worth getting bracers for. Obviously if you can get another size category somehow for Huge scimitars, then it becomes a little more valuable. And I'm pretty sure there are no Large races or even Powerful Build races without LA. Half-giant with 1 LA is as close as you can get I bet. |

That coupled with sizing weapons = lots of big hits! |
| Frugal09-11-07, 09:42 AM | The trick I use for this is Enlage. That coupled with sizing weapons = lots of big hits! Why would you need sizing, the weapons increase when you're enlarged. |
| Knightblde09-12-07, 08:13 AM | Because you can make a medium weapon huge and use it in two hands. I can start with a medium elven court blade, and end up enlarging myself, and sizing the weapon to be a huge elven court blade. With Morphing I can change it into a Halberd or other reach weapon and have a field day with my new strength and reach. Also if I get disarmed, the weapon can still be whatever size I want, rather than reverting to the normal size. |

But if you're using strongarm bracers to start with, why not use a large courtblade? It'll increase to huge when you're enlarged and other than resizing when you drop it, it will also save you a ton of gold. |

| Frugal09-14-07, 07:50 AM | Doing that would limit my options. Also, with morphing I can turn my weapon into a reach weapon when needed. Lots more options. Did I mention that I like options? That would be why I said morphing is something different. But unless I'm missing something (not familiar with the enhancements), isn't sizing a different enhancement from morphing? |
| Knightblde09-14-07, 08:31 AM | Yes, sizing is different, but only costs 5,000 gp it is not a +1 or whatever enhancement. If I want to use my Elven Court Blade in one hand, I could not do it if it was Large. But if I want to use two weapons, I would need it to be smaller. Size comes into play when I am switching styles. Besides, I can make it so small I can hide it like a dagger, then draw it, resize it, and have a massive weapon to deal damage with! Imagine the look on my opponents face! |

Well the sizing to small enough to be hidden is nice, but remember that if you want to wield it 1-handed you're doing so at a -2 penalty do to being inappropriately sized. |
| Mark_Aged09-14-07, 03:53 PM | You can use the feat in my sig called One-Handed Use. |

| Frugal09-15-07, 03:34 PM | LOL I still feel that you are incorrect. The strongarm bracers will allow you to use it in one hand. But I have already mentioned this above. Some agree, some disagree. You do you. I don't own MIC so that makes it a bit tougher for me. As far as I know though, it gives you a feature similar to that as powerful build. Powerful build allows you to wield a large weapon (assuming you're medium) at no penalty as it was intended to be wielded. However, it does nothing to change the amount of effort required for wielding a medium weapon. Since I'm still a medium creature I can't wield a 2-handed weapon in 1 hand, even though I can wield a large 2-handed weapon at no penalty. My understanding is that the bracers work the same way. |
| Knightblde09-16-07, 02:32 PM | They do not work the same way. They make you count as one size larger, but specificly state you can also still use the same size weapons. 1 size larger = 1 less step of effort. 2 hands = 1 hand. I see the point people are making, but there is no 'extra power' it just gives you more options. Large Longsword = 2d6 Medium Greatsword = 2d6 The -2 for being unfamiliar with weapons of a different size makes total sense. I believe that the bracers make up for this. But it is up for interpretation, for sure. |
| war_thog09-19-07, 09:05 PM | Weapon design is an important factor from an IRL perspective.... Longsword hilts are designed differently to greatswords..... weighting in the blade is different, etc. This is where the -2 penalty comes across. While counting as 1 size larger is all well and good, and using the same weapons still is also much fun, they dont go together. It doesnt make a large longsword = a greatsword. You wouldnt be able to wield the greatsword 1 handed. However seeing as a large longsword deals the same damage and according to D's can be wielded like a 2h weapon.... then you end up where you were aiming for anyway. *unless your magic bracer power is killed somehow* on a side note....... the fact that you can wield a 1h weapon in exactly the same way as a 2h weapon makes little sense. Its not how they were designed to be wielded. Katanas were designed to be wielded interchangably from 1h to 2h. Longswords were not *or so says my mate who does medieval swordfighting* |
