| Empyrium06-28-07, 08:52 PM | Is this possible without having to be mounted? Like a feat for medium size guys to be able to wield a 2 handed weapon in one hand or anything of a sort with as little penalty as possible? |
| NeueRegel06-28-07, 08:56 PM | Lance: A lance deals double damage when used from the back of a charging mount. It has reach, so you can strike opponents 10 feet away with it, but you can’t use it against an adjacent foe. While mounted, you can wield a lance with one hand. So, "Nope". |
| jaelis06-28-07, 08:57 PM | No, there really isn't any way to do that. Your best bet is to develop a homebrew 1H exotic weapon that approximates what you want. |
| Dnarris06-29-07, 02:30 AM | Is this possible without having to be mounted? Like a feat for medium size guys to be able to wield a 2 handed weapon in one hand or anything of a sort with as little penalty as possible? There's a footman's lance in one of the books somewhere that is basically a 1-handed lance that can be used while on foot....heck if I can remember where I saw it though. |
| TheCobra06-29-07, 02:35 AM | This is a funny thread, because I don't think anyone uses a lance in one hand even while mounted. They always want that extra damage. While the technique is historical, it can't be as superior to everything else as D&D rules suggest. If anything, I suspect the couched lance actually hits harder than the two-handed grip. And keeping a hand on the reigns is likely better than the rules make it. |
| InkBlot06-29-07, 02:39 AM | With the one mounted character I played, I used the lance one handed (while mounted) with a shield in the other hand. However, that character wasn't realy optomized for anything. It was my first real attempt at making a ToB character, and I relied on strikes too much. Anyway, you can always use a small lance as a one-handed weapon with a -2 penalty. Oddly enough, it would become a light weapon while you're mounted. |
| Dnarris06-29-07, 06:55 AM | I actually made a centaur fighter/cavalier that is amazing with a lance. He gets x8 damage on a charge and I've used a combination of feats and magic items to allow him to wield a gargantuan lance without penalty. We even decided since the feats and magic items allow you to increase the size of the weapon without penalty this meant you could still use the gragantuan lance one handed while mounted and of course we counted the centaur as always mounted. What's really great is if you use the reach rules in the 3.5 Arms and Equipment guide the lance's reach increases by 5' for every size increase so going from medium to gargantuan the lance's reach increased to 25'. I even got the lance enchanted with an ability that from the MIC that lets you continue your charge if you kill your target and lets you cleave against another foe in your charge range. The damage was really high when combined with leap attack and power attack. |
| tarkin06-29-07, 10:31 AM | How did you get the Lance damage up to x8? I strongly suspect you are using a questionable ruling to do that. But then, maybe not. Whichever fool decided that centaurs qualify as mounted for certain feats needs to understand logic a bit better. They should have instead create Quadruped only feats, that are similar but not identical to the mounted feats. |

Normal damage (100%) x2 for charging with a lance (+100%) x2 for having valorous enchanted on the lance (+100%) x2 for using battle jump (If you are in the FRCS) (+100%) X5 for using the unstoppable charge (+400%) So there you have it your normal damage x7. I made a mistake saying x8. It's only x8 if you crit. ^_^ |
| Kursk06-29-07, 11:59 AM | Lances were designed to be used one handed while mounted. The damage is from the momentum of the charge. Are you going to charge of foot? (pretty hilarious) or just poke at someone while on foot? Pretty ineffective. |
| Zekarra06-29-07, 12:12 PM | What if you are playing a centaur race character? Could you then use the lance on HOOF?:D Since you are kinda mounted. |

He gets x8 damage on a charge and I've used a combination of feats and magic items to allow him to wield a gargantuan lance without penalty. Do you really believe that the designers had in mind a PC that is capable of doing x7 damage on a charge? Or that he is able to equip a gargantuan lance too? Where is your good sense, BTW? And most important: where is your DM to stop this munchkin apocalypse? P.S.: Please, tell me how you got a gargantuan weapon without penalty. |

| Kursk06-29-07, 12:45 PM | My DM is actually capable of handling this sort of character just fine. :D Take your snarkiness else where. Good day Sir! So, mechanically, how did you pull it off? Sounds interesting. |
| Dnarris06-29-07, 12:56 PM | So, mechanically, how did you pull it off? Sounds interesting. Well, since you asked. As a large creature a centaur can't use a medium lance without taking a -2 penalty, so the Centaur has to use a lance made for its size which is a large lance. So here you have the lance sitting as large. Then you put on a pair of strongarm bracers from the magic item compendium and you are able to wield a huge lance without penalties due to the fact that it treats you as one size larger when wearing them. So technically you are a huge creature for the purposes of wielding the lance. Then you take monkey grip, I admit I did forget you take the -2 for using monkey grip. However, this lets you wield a weapon one size larger than you are which you are considered a huge creature for the purposes of wielding this weapon meaning that you can use a gargantuan lance with a scant -2 from your attack bonus. Now, you could even work it in to where you could take levels of psychic warrior instead of fighter and then use an augmented expansion to increase your size two more steps.....so with my character I didn't go as far as I could go, but there you go. Also note that no where does the difficulty to wield the weapon become any harder so you can indeed still wield it one handed while mounted. |
| Kursk06-29-07, 01:01 PM | Well, since you asked. As a large creature a centaur can't use a medium lance without taking a -2 penalty, ... Thanks for the data. |
| Lecen_of_Mitran06-29-07, 04:47 PM | Thanks for the data. You cant mix Monkey Grip and Strongarm Bracers. What´s next? All those and Powerfull build too? |
| Dnarris06-29-07, 05:22 PM | You cant mix Monkey Grip and Strongarm Bracers. What´s next? All those and Powerfull build too? I said good day to you sir! And P.S. to you Sir snotty troll....the only thing that strongarm bracers doesn't stack with is powerful build. |

If it were anything but a centaur, shoot the horse. The answer to this is "death from above" Death from above is a very entertaining way to defeat melee munchkins. |
| Rulebook06-30-07, 07:10 AM | x7-8 on a lance is nothing munchkiny. in fact its nothing anythign flying with ranged attacks cant handle without effort. |
| Ecalsneerg06-30-07, 09:04 AM | I said good day to you sir! And P.S. to you Sir snotty troll....the only thing that strongarm bracers doesn't stack with is powerful build. Sir snotty troll? I love it! But, related to the topic: does anyone know, theoretically, if say you were mounted, using a lance in one hand and a shield in the other. Then your horse gets killed and you fall off. Would you have to drop the lance as it is now 2-handed? |

| highbulp06-30-07, 10:21 AM | does anyone know, theoretically, if say you were mounted, using a lance in one hand and a shield in the other. Then your horse gets killed and you fall off. Would you have to drop the lance as it is now 2-handed? No, you wouldn't. You are perfectly capable of holding a lance in one hand. But you can't wield the lance without dropping the shield. And wasn't there a rule that let's you use a two-handed weapon with one hand with a -4 attack penalty? Or am I imagining things? |
| Dnarris06-30-07, 01:18 PM | No, you wouldn't. You are perfectly capable of holding a lance in one hand. But you can't wield the lance without dropping the shield. And wasn't there a rule that let's you use a two-handed weapon with one hand with a -4 attack penalty? Or am I imagining things? You are imagining things. You can wield a weapon with penalty based on its size -2 penalty for one size category up or down. But you cannot change the handiness of a weapon that is your size. A medium creature using a medium lance cannot make attacks with a lance in one-hand if they are not mounted regardless of what penalty you want to give them. The weapon is just not capable of being wielded at that point due to handiness rules. |
| Darth Sephiroth06-30-07, 02:12 PM | Add the balanced property to your weapon for more fun for you, perhaps even make it a heavy one for two more sizes. Balanced works because it treats the weapon as one size smaller for being wielded and a heavy weapon is treated as one size larger for effects for another -2 to attack. |
| NASCAR_1080i07-01-07, 06:47 AM | how much does a gargantuan lance weigh? |
| Dnarris07-01-07, 10:38 AM | Good question. I'll have to look into that I wasn't too concerned about it playing a centaur since my strength is so high and centaur are capable of carrying double the normal carrying capacity. |
| utilitarian07-01-07, 11:49 AM | Y'know, everyone is quick to point out that they'd rather get thier double power attack investment and 1.5 str weilding the lance in two hands, and some people come back with the hisorical lance and shield bit.... Why does no one point out the advantages of Dual Wielding lances while mounted? Just take Oversized TWF to eliminate the steep penalty and any ability to let you make a full attack on a charge while mounted and you're set. it's what my ranger/wild plains outrider/ashworm dragoon does. |
| StruckingFuggle07-01-07, 03:59 PM | This is a funny thread, because I don't think anyone uses a lance in one hand even while mounted. They always want that extra damage. Like the guy above me said ... if you get a full attack on a charge, dual wielding lances with OTWF may cause more damage overall than twohanding it. ^^ As for "oh but it doesn't work on flying enemies", well, how hard is it to get a flying mount? Shouldn't be too hard... |
| CaoSlayer07-01-07, 04:15 PM | Whichever fool decided that centaurs qualify as mounted for certain feats needs to understand logic a bit better. The fool is the redactor of the centaur rules in Races of Faerun. Good question. I'll have to look into that I wasn't too concerned about it playing a centaur since my strength is so high and centaur are capable of carrying double the normal carrying capacity. I would be more concerned about being able to turn a corner in a dungeon or rotating in a forest full of trees. |

| utilitarian07-01-07, 04:28 PM | Wouldn't that just be a shortspear? I'm fairly certain the Footman's lance was a holdover from 3.0, it was the smaller sized lance intended for small races, but as a side effect could be used in one hand by medium sized races (though it lacked reach) I don't think it actually exists any longer |

Yeah, that makes sense. Started out as light/medium/heavy lances which date back to 1st edition... then they simplified to character size... and then narrowed it down again once the rules for weapon size had been tightened up? |
