I have a player who wants to fight with a Spear and a Shield. However, a Spear (not a Longspear or a Shortspear, just a regular Spear) is a two-handed weapon. Could he take a feat to fight with it in one hand effectively, similar to the way the Bastard Sword works?

Note that the Bastard sword does LESS damage than a two handed sword.

As such, it is not appropriate to just let someone take a feat with no penalty and be able to use any two handed weapon with one hand.

However, a spear is a simple two handed weapon. Simple weapons do less damage than Martial weapons.

For this reason, I would allow someone to take a feat and in exchange be able to use a normal, regular spear with one hand.

This would be weapon specific to the spear, not to any two handed weapon.

For that matter, have him use a trident (1d8 damage martial weapon) and just call it a large spear. I wouldn't consider it too powerful to make a 1d10 spear as an exotic weapon that can be used one handed that can't be thrown. Stat it up similar to the war axe, but have it do piercing damage.

All in all I'd consider it balanced.

The feat is called Monkey Grip.

Old rule, no longer valid. While Monkey Grip did that in 3.0, it does not in 3.5.

Instead, in 3.5 it lets you use a Large size one handed weapon in one hand instead of two, or a Large size two handed weapon in both hands instead of not being allowed to use it at all.

Yep for a feat wielding a spear one handed is perfectly fine, it would be about the same as an exotic weapon proficiency that is actually worth it!

P.S. I would suggest just making a feat that applied to spears only. Do NOT make it an exotic weapon that does the job, I would simply make it a feat that lets you wield "spears only" one handed. It does not allow you to create a weapon that surpasses the non exotic one handed norms in any way so there is no special balancing factors I would require to make it an exotic weapon.

if he's trying to mimic the phalanx way of fighting (seen in the movie 300) then he should know they were using spear that were 4-5 feet long.
those are short spears.
tell him wielding a 'spear' that does 1d8 and is 8 feet long, means he cant do sh**.

(just to cover my butt, a 8 ft spear his held 2ft from butt, and 4-5ft from butt. giving you a reach of about 3 ft or so. thats why it's a non reach weapon even though it's 8 ft.)

also, the swords they used in the movie were short swords. - phalanx fight with a large shield and a light weapon.

And for everyone who wants me to stop talking ;): technically the shield that the phalanx used, which were circa(around) 4ft tall by 2ft wide, are Heavy shields not tower. Tower shields are from ankles to neck without crouching much, and phalanx fight in a compact position, crouched and poised. (as well as compact positions within rank.)
