All of those next to worthless cantrips you never use can be made into 1st level spells at a mere 2 to 1 exchange. Unfortunately it only works for spontaneous casters. Particularily for warmages. They know an overwelming 5 0th level spells as outlined in the complete arcane. Yes, I understand that more have added since then. And with their warmage edge they can exchange their 6 0th-level spells for 3 1st-level spells. More accurately, for magic missles.

It's from Races of Dragon, and the only requirement is that you be a spontaneous caster

Versatile Spellcaster is pure gold for Warmages. I'd consider it an almost must-have for them.

Hmm, and I thought sorc has 6 0th to start... wait, isn't that one more than warmage?

Don't be so quick to write off cantrips. I've seen Mage Hand put to very good and creative use (a Sorcerer used it to dump a bucket on gnoll barbarian's head, thus blinding him) and my Beguiler has put Daze to suprisingly effective use. These are low-level campaigns, mind you, but the point still stands. Still, it'd be nice to have the option...

I'm not trying to write off cantrips. I know how useful they can be. I've used cantrips to great effect. But for spontaneous casters it seems like a must have in case of emergency and at the end of the day if you need first level spells and you haven't used all your cantrips yet, why not?

It's not that cantrips are useless it is that the WARMAGE cantrips are useles. It's that unlike the sorc cantrips that remain useful every level till 20 (read magic, message, prestidigitation, detect magic, mending, open/close, dancing lights, light, ghost sound, mage hand, etc) the warmages get exactly one cantrip that is at all useful after level 4 (light)

Those 1d3+edge and 1d6+edge cantrips are vital in the first three levels of a warmage life and are then too weak to be useful for the rest of their career.

This is one reason I strongly consider taking dancing lights instead of tenser's disk as the first advanced learning spell. Warmages have a lot of use for a spell that lights up an area 100-300' away and can be redirected as a free action. They might use their 6 cantrips/day with that spell.

but yeah. Versatile spellcaster makes the whole problem go away.

Really? I figured Detect Magic to be a no-brainer for that spell choice.
