Vow of Poverty and alternative material components/focuses [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've looked around and couldn't find a definitive answer on this, but I'm in a party that just picked up a VoP cleric. I'm playing a paladin, but wondering how a few of the group's and my paladin's tactics might have to change in order to respect her vows.

a. Clearly VoP is going to keep her from having more expensive material components (importantly those diamonds everyone likes for raising dead/etc. ). I've seen on the boards that wizards can beg for material components, and in the BoED that they can benefit from potions and stuff granted by other party members. Would it violate her vow do you think if the party had a sort of communal wealth with the understanding that "if someone dies, you can use these diamonds?" Would there be a better way of going about that?

Is there some sort of feat or prc ability that can be taken to replace expensive material components with something like an XP cost?

b. I know my character has several abjuration spells that require different focuses, most notably that I can think of: Shield other which requires platinum rings worth 50 gp. The VoP cleric couldn't have one, then, could she? Do you think it'd be reasonable to suggest something else? Like party tattoos or brands? as a focus? Or is she going to have to protect herself on this?

I can't remember much on the details, but there is a feat in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting that allows for the use of abstract "runes" instead of material components and (I believe) focii. I had my character inscribe the runes as scar-tattoo on his arms for all of his spells (the default assumption is you carry around a keychain of metal plates, but it isn't necessary, and spending money on ink doesn't really count as having an item, since the tattoos would have no value as actual capital).

Yes you can beg your party member for components when playing VoP. But diamonds are not magical so you can own them. You although need to use them for good or give it to the nearest temple. But it depend how the character see the diamonds, if he never took them out unless he need use a resurrection spell he use them well because it for good deeds.

You have to beg to get your components or other non-magical item but you can wear or keep them if you begged for it.

Can also burn xp in place of expensive components.

Where's it say you can burn xp in lieu of components?

really up to the DM, but diamonds are against vow because you can own items over X value.

I personally ran a monk and would donate some of my gold earned through adventuring towards a community pool that was used for things like potions, wands, etc. We just made the assumption it was needed to work better as a team (benefits good), and that i would know how much i put in.. so if the team ever did anything against my vow, i would be able to take it and leave, of course donate it since i couldnt carry the money around but ya.

i was never able to personally carry the teams money, and whenever helping pillage a dungeon, i was able to carry/drag items out with the intent of selling and then donating just as long as i wasnt wearing/ever gaining benefit for the items... because frankly if you dont have that as a ruling i dont see how a vop character could ever donate anything of decent value to anyone without breaking his vow... or w/o having to hire someone to carry around all that he is going to donate.

really with our group it was more of a "gentlemans agreement" that i wasnt trying to break the rules, or finda loop hole it was okay... we went more with spirit of the rules vs strict i cant ever do this even if it doesnt make sense

In most games I've played the character that dies was required to pay the cost for his own resurrection, meaning that your cleric will never be the one owning the diamonds, guaranteeing that she does not violate her vow.

As a side note, VOP monks are fun!

Well but you can't pay for your raising until you've been raised. the diamond has to come from somewhere.

i think kamronshepard was implying that You could pay for your own resurecton ahead of time. Simply by Having the Diamonds (and perhaps an amount of money to be donated to the poor for the service) Ready before ever dying.

We only ever had one VoP character so this has never come up really

Exactly; I should have clarified. All characters new that either their body would have the diamond removed from their body or that they would be indebted to the caster until they reimbursed him.
