Quick question regarding the interaction of these two feats. How does wealth distribution work? Can a VoP character give some of his share of the loot to his cohort? My first instinct was to say no, but then I realized that the VoP character is already sharing the loot with the rest of his party, and from the viewpoint of the character the cohort is another member of the party. Obviously giving all of his share wouldn't be allowed.

If not, the two feats could still work together I think if you gave the cohort VoP as well, because then the cohort would be self-sufficient in terms of food etc.

Anything I'm not seeing here that would prevent this?

people follow for many reasons. gold is one of those reasons. if you were someone's cohort, wouldn't you follow a person who made you rich?

another reason is respect

maybe the cohort sees the leader as the father he never had?

maybe the cohort is a bard and the leader is the bard's muse?

I think your fundamental problem is that you don't know why the cohort is following the leader. VoP and leadership are VERY Role-Playing feats.

From the SRD: The cohort should be equipped with gear appropriate for its level.

From this alone, I would be willing to have you give enough to your cohort to keep her equipped appropriate for level. How much of that should come from your share and how much should just be out of standard party treasure is another matter, since normally you are required to claim your share, but donate it to charity to keep wealth by level reasonable. One solution that I've seen(though I don't know how well the math works out) is to give cohorts a half-share of treasure compared to normal characters.

VOP is essentially an alternate means of accessing magic gear. That is why you give up your normal share of the loot - to avoid double counting.

Wealth distribution should occur as per normal. Have everyone split the loot as per normal (as though you did not have the VOP feat), then the VOP character gives up his normal gear (he hangs on to them until he can donate them to a worthy cause, just that he cannot benefit from them).

The cohort, and everyone else still gets their fair share (and only their fair share - no less and especially no more).

Or the cohort also has Vow of Poverty. He has heard of your teachings, agrees, and follows.

Maybe he has taken the Vow on his own volition, heard of your good works, and decided the two of you working together is the right course of action. Two of you separated to spread The Word in a larger area is a viable idea, but for the moment you need to reinforce each other to defeat a strong evil. When the time is right you go your separate ways to spread The Word to a wider area and you get a new cohort and start again.

I have read that VoP does give some other benefits for giving up the gold...

Can someone please tell me what those are??

I'm looking at starting a druid. And don't have much past the core books. I used the compiled feat list, but only gives reference.

I'm sure you would like to know this. Only WotC would prefer it if you paid them for their product. If you wanna know, buy the book.

There are a whole slew of them, level dependent, including bonus feats, ac bonuses, ability score bonuses, and other random pieces that people normally buy equipment to do. It takes up about two pages in the Book of Exalted Deeds to list it all out.
