So I am in the process of making a concept character to run as an NPC with my players, and I need some help.

I am making a warforged monk based (somewhat) around the character of "Sonny" from I, Robot.

The problem comes in rule interpretation regarding the Monk Wall-Walking substitution ability (Dungeonscape, pp.11). The substitution allows you to run 20' vertically (enhancing 10' w/ progression. replaces slow fall) and make a climb check to grab on after that.

Here is my question:

If you can run 50' in a turn and you run 20' horizontally (on the floor towards a wall) and 20' up a wall, wouldn't it be conceivable to then jump (up to) 10'? Has anyone ever established house rules around this?

Next. If you can run straight up a wall 20', isn't is possible (in theory) to run on a wall horizontally in an arc, a'la Prince of Persia? How far would that be? Certainly farther than 20', right? Could you conceivably jump off of a horizontal wall run?

I searched the forums, FAQs, errata, and even customer service (who was no help whatsoever), so now I turn to you guys and gals.

Take a look at the skill tricks in Complete Scoundrel next time you see a copy in your hobby store. Some of the movement tricks work precisely like, and have a very Prince of Persia feel.

I do have complete scoundrel (which one of my players is borrowing at the moment). I was just looking for some suggestions dealing with that single substitution.

I will check some of the movement Skill Tricks when I get my book back next week. Thanks

Anyone else?

I definitely say that with the Wall-Walking substitution or the Walk the Walls skill trick I'd let someone attempt things like it, but not for over 20'. I'd say 15' or at most 20', both with a stipulation of moving at least 10' on the ground before starting the wall run.

Since you can't actually 'run' along a wall due to the laws of reality, horizontal wall running would only be good for making a safe 15' jump along rooftops or setting yourself up for a jump at the end of the horizontal movement, which the skill trick Wall Jumper is well suited for. Very PoP.

Well I looked at the "walk the walls" skill trick on the Scoundrel excerpts. It says that you can "run straight up wall for 1 round" which leads me to believe that you could move your distance vertically. (again I don't have the book in front of me).

Now I don't care if you are an olympic sprinter, I would have a hard time believing that someone could run up a height equal to a 2 or 4 story building and not have enough leg strength to move in a horizontal arc, like a surfer or skateboarder.

Also, I would need to look at the skill trick, but "wall jumper" seems to refer to a static position jump from height. If a wall run is conceivable, it seems that one would get some bonus between a running start and a static start.

Yes, a second look at wall jumper and it says you to be working with a climb check, bummer.

However, once you look at the full description for Walk the Walls, you'll see the limitation they have in place for it. Really I'd use that limit for horizontal as well, since horizontal movement I'd still say is based solely on initial momentum, and the trick limit scales.
