I'm trying to wrap my head around the Wand creation thing. I just took the feat and the price I came up with is not the price the DM came up with and I am trying to figure out the math.

I am wanting to create a 5th level casting wand of magic missile so the math I believe should be

1 (spell level) x 5 (caster level) x 750g = 3750g

I should have to pay 150 xp and 1875g to create this item.

The DM says that the math is

1 (spell level) x 5 (caster level) x 750g = 3750g + 1875g (1/2 base cost) = 5625g

I need to pay 225 xp and 5625g to create the item.

Who is right with their math?

The difference is a consequence of the 'materials costing one-half of this base price' part of the Craft Wand entry.

My understanding has always been that these materials are already represented within the base cost, but that if the item-crafting process is interrupted or abandoned, this portion of the cost is forfeit, while the other half is unexpended.

So does that mean that I am correct or is the DM correct in the total cost?

You are right.

The market price for a wand of magic missile (caster lv5) is 1*5*750, or 3750gp.

To craft it, you pay 1/2 the market price (or 1875gp) and 1/25 the market price in xp (or 150xp).

You are. Turn to page 246 of the DMG. Check Table 7-26: Wands. Entry number 37 on the minor column gives the price of a CL 5 wand of Magic Missles.
