Ok well I have a question on some info I can't find anywhere... I'd like a page reference if you've got it. So, generally with my fighters I go through power attack and cleave (go try and snag whirlwind attack if i get up there in levels...) anyway there's a feat i want that requires weapon proficiency and weapon focus. (Short Haft, if you're wondering). Any way I tried to look up weapon proficiency, but cant find an entry. And I was wondering if it's something your character can just achieve over time, or if its more like a feat.

Thanks for any help.

Players handbook, page 112, lower right hand corner.
Weapons:

Proficiencies are done with groups.

If your class does not give you the proficiency with the weapon you want, you can take a feat to add more weapons.

Martial weapon Proficiency feat, page 97.

Exotic weapon proficiency, page 94.

Haha It's listed under "Martial Weapon Proficiency" Not "Weapon Proficiency"

I feel smart now...

Don't forget that in order to select weapon Focus you need to have the proficiency groups your weapon is listed in. Also the Exotic Proficiency work different than other. you can take it multiple times but each time it apply to only 1 exotic weapon. like :
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Bastard Sword)
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Boomerang)
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Elven Thinblade)

Actually, Martial Weapon Proficiency works the same way, it's just the Simple weapons that are done in a group.

For fighters and other melee types they get it for all weapons. The single weapon is for a wizard who wants to be able to use a greatsword.

What? As a class feature, fighters get prociciency with all martial weapons. As a class feature, wizards gain proficiency with a couple simple weapons. The feat Martial Weapon Proficiency gets you proficiency with a single martial weapon.

Sorry, I meant to make it clear that I was talking about the feat. The class feature is really just the collection of all feats.

In your character class description there is a paragraph titled "Weapon and Armor Proficiency" which lists all the weapons and armor that class is automatically proficient with (that he can use with no penalties). In the case of a Fighter, a level 1 Fighter is proficient with all Simple and Martial weapons, all armor, and all shields including Tower Shields.

The only feat for a weapon or armor proficiency a Fighter would ever have to take is if the item in question is classified as an Exotic Weapon or Armor (no exotic armor or shields in Core). If the weapon in question is something like a Glaive, then all you would need is proficiency with that weapon, and since you are proficient with all Martial weapons, then you are proficient with the Glaive.

If you were a Wizard who wanted to use a Glaive however, you would need to either multiclass with a class which granted martial weapon proficiencies, or take the feat Martial Weapon Proficiency (Glaive).
